Hardtail Trail Bike Tyre Combo

Thanx everyone for your thorough responses. It helps to come to a community like this.

I am having Wayne over at Rapide build me a wheelset, and I'm yet to decide if I want the 25mm or 30mm Internal rim width. My frame has clearance for up to 2.4 tyres on 29er wheels.

Currently I am leaning towards the 25mm Rims with Minion DHF 2.3 Front and Aggressor 2.3 Rear.

This is what I feel will give me the best all purpose combo for the type of riding I 1.) Want to do and 2.) Will do most of the time. Hehehe

Can anybody comment on any reason for me to go for the 30mm rims?

Better sidewall support

Lower Pressures; more grip

Stronger (all things remaining equal)

Personally, even on the 25mm jobs I'd go for a 2.5 minion. Those 2.3's come up very narrow, and behave quite differently to the 2.5's. BUT. 30mm is better than 25mm. Unless you're very worried about an extra 40g (yawn)

Aggressor is a good tyre, but I prefer the Spaz Slaughter. Faster rolling, almost the same braking grip and slightly higher volume. MUCH more cornering grip, though, thanks to those side lugs.

I would counter that and say stick with the 25mm internal on your frame that can only accommodate a max. 2.4" tyre.  You will get a better profile off of the 25mm vs the 30mm rim.

Stans show it well with their recommendation charts.

I would be cautious with the 25mm rim and 2.5 Minion, tire more susceptible to "burping" and coming off the rim (depending on what pressures you run)

That being said Minion DHF and Minion SS solid combo

I previously had very good results with a 25mm internal rim and a 2.5 DHF on the front of my AM HT .... but this was the Super Tacky DH casing tyre, that thing was great on the front and never had a issue with lower pressure and burping.

But this was a 26'er wheel, and 26'ers are more awesomererer that other wheel sizes :P
