Martin PJ Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Do these products actually work? I have bought a few cans from Chris Willemse and they look good. Has anyone used this type of product in a race or training? For those that don't know, it is a can with sealant and compressed air inside, supposed to inflate and seal your tire at the same time. They have been around for years in motor cars.

bikebloke Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 even more reason to try one out then- wont you feel bad if you spent that much and you get a puncture in the middle of nowhere and it doesnt work (its cheaper to find out at home where you can just walk inside and have a beer if the thing is just overpriced crap ) i hope it works like a bomb cause if it doesnt you are going to pissed that you bought a "few"
Martin PJ Posted February 23, 2018 Author Posted February 23, 2018 When you race with tubbies, punctures are always a problem. Not so easy to repair a tubby during the race, it would be nice it this worked. Difficult to test a tubby repair outside of a race. This bike shop owner sold me a can of another brand a few years back once for R200 telling me the triathletes carry only this stuff, I kept it for a year and used it in a normal tube during training and it didn't work too well. So that was my one data point. Could be because the stuff was old, who knows. The other option is to carry a small tube of Stans and use that in a race with a bomb. I know that fixes about half road punctures, providing the hole is not too big.
Hairy Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 Some of these cans are R200..... did you pay R200 per can for something you are not certain will work?

I did use Stans for a while in my road bike tubes, and it worked, kind of. It fixed small punctures, but also wrecked the tube after a few months once the sealant dried out, so in the end I stopped doing it. It may have some value putting 50 ml of sealant in a tube for a big race, if you are not worried about tossing the tube after the race. I also found that once you put sealant in a tube, you cannot puncture repair it, as the patches don't stick.

bikebloke Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 carry a pre streched pre glued tubbie instead and one bomb
Schmorglebot Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I know they are popular with triathletes, even amongst the pros. Here are a couple of resources that hopefully answer your question First a clip from GTN: https://youtu.be/xYWl7mi6Ijs?t=2m30s Second an article from bikecyclingreviews.com http://www.bikecyclingreviews.com/pitstop/ Both use a product called Pit Stop by Vittorria

I didn't bomb my road tubes, they dried out anyway after a few months, then the inside of the tube became very sticky. So doing this on a tubby which has very thin tubes is not a good idea if you plan to keep the tubby for a few years, which is possible if you only race on it. I hear you about the bombs on the MTB, they dry out the sealant quicker than anything.
