Epic stingy prize money

Snip<Fact is that we now have pro’s coming out to do our local races a good couple of months before the Epic (and no, its not for the prize money). Many now train in SA in the Off Season and the event has evolved into an international series. >

Doping controls are also so much more lax here in the good old RSofA.

Not true. They are tested out of competition as much in SA as they are back home in Europe.

By which authority? our lab was closed down. And I know for a fact that we are one of the most lax training grounds in the world, but who cares.

The UCI administers the tests ultimately. Our lab closing down merely means that samples are being sent away for testing.

Don’t be lazy. Read up about blood passports, the UCI’s testing regime and how riders are tested almost without exception when they are attending training camps the world over. Do I look like Google to you?

'Mkay. You can just admit if you made statements without checking your facts.

I bow a knee to your authority on this matter. Sorry for missing the obvious. No worries.

Apology accepted. It an easy mistake to make. SAIDS does not only test cyclists, but athletes in all sporting codes under WADA’s jurisdiction. As you were, ladies.

Branden Grace is ranked 27th best golfer in the world at the moment. I chatted to his mom a while back, and she confirmed that when he competes, it is no longer about the money, but the prestige associated with winning big tournaments. For instance, in the the Major, to be played next month, the players are competing for the green jacket worn by the winners circle. The pay cheque is secondary to saying they are major winners. But in saying that, I do feel that when you win that amount of dosh, it truly ceases to be about money in golf. Even if you don't win, and end up last on the final day, you are in the money.

I suppose to a degree, the same applies to winning the Epic. It is more about the prestige associated with winning. Also, I suppose that sponsorships are more readily achieved having won. The winners cheque becomes a mere formality at that stage.

But then all this pales if you are a soccer player...

ever heard of Rory sabbatini? Golfer from Durban, been on the us tour for a while. Career earnings north of $30m and that's without sponsorships.

Agree, very low considering the entrance fee. The pro teams will spend much more to even participate. But unfortunately this is the norm for cycling in general. Money lies with sponsorship deals for the pros...

But why does this have to be the Norm. Think of the costs. 60 k for your entry fee that goes towards what?

All the food is covered by Woolworths.

Tents are bought and paid for and have a lifespan of at least 4 Epics

Absa pays huge bucks to be a named sponsor.

Land Rover pays huge to be a sponsor not to mention all the other sponsors.

There was a reason why Kevin Vermaak was able to sell this product for 10 of millions of dollars.

Surely at the very least they can get another sponsor to make the prize money a 100 000 euros. Think of the field we would have every year.

This is way bigger than the Sun City 2 million dollar where here they are getting revenue from contestants. At the Sun City they pay appearance money. Makes no sense.

Shouldn’t we be whining about paying golfers and rugby players less rather than paying cyclists more? The pro’s ultimate job is to sell bicycles, not to sell entries to a race. No one is riding the Epic because Nino os riding, but many riders are on Scotts these days due to Nino’s success (even if only influenced subconsciously). Let the teams look after the riders, there is enough profit in bicycle sales to do so.

Seriously. These are professional athletes. They work damn hard to be where they are. Sponsors should be made to pay to play. Absa benefit from the top in the world participating in an event that they sponsor. How much coverage would they get if the likes of Nino and others would not be at the event.

Wine to whales, Saani to sea, the Munga etc case in point. No big stars. No coverage.

Epic is world wide coverage.

So yesterday’s live stream had, by this morning, 52,000 views. You get more people than that in a rugby stadium, let alone tv viewers etc. Let’s not kid ourselves that there are millions of people glued to their tv’s watching the epic every day.

Tour de France final day last year had 7.3 million live viewers, tv only

2015 6 nations england v France had 9.6 million live viewers

Golf - who knows but millions upon millions

52k is not a significant number

Screw your facts that don’t support my views on this matter. I will discard these facts and replace them with assumptions and feelings.
