My husband is looking at upgrading his wheels. He is still riding with the wheels that the bike came out with. He does not want to spend more than R5000. The bike shop recommends the Easton EA70 wheelset. What do my fellow hubbers recommend as we do not have much knowledge on this one.

I've heard your weight is also a factor. (he weighs ?92kg)

The Eastons will give him years of pleasure (proberbly not something you want to hear). But he can look at Fulcrum 3s just to be different.

I've got Fulcrum 3's and they are bulletproof, and great looking. Only problem is they have priced themselves right out of the market. The "official" SA price is now R6500, compared to the import price of < 5K.

I find it interesting that no-one asked you why he wants to exchange his wheels. Is there something wrong with the existing wheels?

You've had suggestions left right and centre of what wheels to buy no-one seems to know what problem they're trying to solve.

Jhb is full of Citi Golfs with aftermarket wheels and there must be heaps of perfectly good wheels lying around somehwere. I sense the same trend has come over to cycling and lament it.

If he puts that R5 000 into your bond on even commodity shares he'll have a nice return in five years time. With the wheel route, in five years time he'll have a set of out of fashion wheels.

However, I have no doubt this advice wil go down like a lead Zeppelin.

I think we deep down know that you are right. I have a couple of sets of wheels, including a hand built set with Chorus hubs and then my Fulcrums.

Neither wheel set gives me any noticeable advantage, so the only reason i can say i bought the Fulcrums is because of the way they look. I wouldn't lament over this trend because its what makes some of us tick.

Sometimes i walk past my bike and think, sh!t, those are nice wheels and it brightens up my dreary day. Thats why i've got my sights on a set of Racing Zero's, with black rims and anodized spokes, and after that, who knows, maybe some Lightweights.
