Hey guys I just saw this GT at my LBS and it looked pretty sweet. Following my other posts about getiing my first mtb, is it a winner?

My first bike was a GT , it's really a solid bike and perfect to learn on. I must've fell during each mtb race for the 1st year and the bike stood the test of time.

The only thing that's still orginal equipment on mine is the frame and stem (but then again, mine is a 2003-model). I've upgraded the fork to Maniotu Black, put on LX equipment and converted to tubeless. In all a nice bike to ride and the frame is indestructible!

I had the V-Brake version. I replaced the cockpit with Easton 50 parts to make it a bit lighter, and converted the tyres with Stans. a few things were replaced in crashes like the brake levers broke off,  Big, Middle and small blades after they lost a few teeth in a crash and the Saddle

, oh and the front wheels rim broke after a crash and had to be replaced.

The frame like every one will tell you is bulletproof.

Do cable disk brakes give lots of trouble? Aren't they better than V brakes though?

Cable disks dont give you much better stopping power, but they do work better in mud and wet conditions. The consensus seems to be that rim brakes are better than cheep cable disks.

Cheep ones will give you headaches due to the cheep construction, single piston action, inferior disk, so they often need adjustment, replacement parts etc.. you can put a good set of rim brakes which will be virtualy maintainance free, you can always upgrade to a decent set of hydrolic brakes later.
