Hi guys and girl

I would like to start cycling to get into shape and get fit.

I don't know much about bikes so please help me to make the right decision. I need a bike for road use and light off road for now this will only be to get me in shape. I need something that will carry my weight 1.88m and 130kg. yeah now you know why I need to get fit.

Have a budget of around R10 000 bases in Western Cape. Been looking around, was told to look at the Titan Drone Trail http://cyclefactory.co.za/shop/bicycles/titan-drone-trail/

Anything you guys can recommend maybe some tips when choosing what to look out for, what is the basics that needs to be on the bike. Not wanting a fancy piece of kit just need to get started for now.

Thanks

There are many many posts on this topic.

First try going second hand, second budget for some kit (helmet, bib, proper pedals/shoes).

For what your wanting to do starting out with a new bike will end one of 2 ways, want to upgrade when the bug bites or never gets ridden.

Welcome to the Hub!

All the bikes you have referred to will do the trick, but....

To support the other posting, although it is extremely tempting to want to jump into the sport with everything nice and new, rather look for a good secondhand deal where often you can find something of better quality and have some dosh left to spend on kit.

Once you know more about what you want to ride, you can splash out. There is much more money to lose on a new bike if it turns out not to be what you want/need. To get into shape you don't need a brand new ride, and once you are in better shape, you're going to want something better anyway.

Agree with buying second hand as a starter . You get more bike and kit for your $ .If you don't know enough about bikes get it checked out by a LBS or even someone on the hub that is close to you and willing to help . ( The options are a mine field when starting out ) If you go MTB as a choice you can ride road and off road . For about R1500 you can get a used set of extra wheels with road slicks . I did the same 10 months ago i bought everything second hand . I weighed 124kg at the time , started doing 10km a day on road and now do 280 km odd per week and have lost 28kg . I now ride a comfortable 30 kph average on road and 23 kph off . The Hub Classified has everything you are looking for .

Dude,

I'm in the same boat as you, just a few centimeters taller.

As was recommended to me at the time, go second hand as you need to see if you'll enjoy it on the long run before spending a lot of money on it (cycling can become quite pricey). You'll also be able to see where and how you ride which will help choose the right bike if and when you want to take the plunge.

In my case the bug did bite quickly and I changed bike in November. Actually i need to clear my wendy house so PM me if you want as I'll be selling my previous bike (Silveback Phoenix all deore components with very low mileage, comes with extras like 2nd wheelset and a set of slick tires for road (never used)...)
