Chain Length

My son replaced his XT 11 - 42 casette with a Sunrace 11 - 46. His derrailleur is the XT long cage derailleur.

What should the chain length be?

Shimano XT  116 links

Sram XX1

Sram PC 1170

KMC

Do not know the lentgh of the other chains mentioned.

Thanks

Depends on what tooth chainring he's running, frame size etc. But I would guess you would need an extra 2 links compared to his old chain.

I would stay away from shimano chains as I find they may of cheese. SRAM have stopped making cheep 11spd chains so I would go for the cheapest KMC 11spd chain you can find as they make a good product and there's no point paying a few hundred bucks to save 15 grams.

Then feed the chain through the derailleur the correct way, shift  to the 46T and place over the chain ring. Pull both chain ends together till the derailleur cage tops out at its max travel then allow for an extra two links.

@Karman yes I do know how to set the lentgh, but I did not buy the chain yet. I do not want to go and buy a chain and then need to take it back as it is to short, hence my question of chain length.

Wrap the chain around the largest sproket at the back and the front chain ring, without passing through the rear derailleur.

Add two extra links worth of chain and you are good to go.

Easiest way to do it.

It must be two full links, though.

edited edit: The amount of rivets added is different if you are using the following component configurations:

A SRAM® derailleur with an eleven or twelve speed cassette and a single front chainring with no rear suspension. With this system, add four rivets from the reference rivet.
