Anyone painted a helmet? I have a TT helmet I use a few times a year, don't want to buy a new one just for that and because I'd prefer a different colour ...

So anyone know how best to do it:-

- preparation

- correct product to use

Thanks

Ben

I saw one that Graeme Kidson in Durban did. Custom paint job. The oke is a genius.

Mostly does frames. He renewed a Sram crankset for me. Superb work. And cheap.

Water based automotive paint - mask very carefully, sand with 400 water paper - blow the dust off, tack and spray - you can use plastic adhesion promoter instead of undercoat as a first layer - then either undercoat or direct to top coat.

You might want to practice this all first before painting the helmet - its unforgiving as a substrate and does not lend itself to sanding over flaws and refinishing drips etc ????

Thanks for the comments gents, just wondering ... I used to race Radio Control cars many years ago and I wondered if that spray paint we used for that would work? That was on 'plastic' bodies.

Like I said a helmet I may use 4-5 times a year and for a maximum duration of about half an hour....

You helmet only has to WORK for 2 seconds... or less - just make sure whatever you do does not impact that critical point when you NEED it....

Maybe try your paint out on a bit of polystyrene out of an old helmet - if it dissolves it's a no go.... if it survives intact then it is probably fine to use.

Alrighty then I'll have a go on an old helmet later that I was going to throw out anyway (cracked)

Bear in mind that this will void any warranty that you may have, and could seriously compromise the integrity of the helmet.

You may find it better (and easier and cheaper) to vinyl wrap it. You can un-peel the wrap if you need to do a warranty claim, and experiment with different colours if you can snag a selection of off-cuts from a car wrap installer. Just be careful with the heat gun, so you don't cook your helmet's inner core.

If you use a cast vinyl made for following multiple curves (ie car bodies) there shouldn't be a need for a heat gun... fun to play with and experiment with colours!

Done, fortunately there is very little 'exposed' polystyrene from the outside so very easy to mask it all off with tape.

Used some plastic 'friendly' rattle can paint from Builders. Damn that plastidip stuff is expensive [emoji50]68b99d9188d02a254ed8a235c3449766.jpg
