Have a soft spot for this event so a bit disappointing to see numbers are down from last year but I still had a good day out.

This year they added 10km to the long route, seems most of it involved climbing. Nasty surprise to those like me that didn't pay attention as the new detour came about 35km into the race when I was mentally ready for a downward run to the finish line.

New route a step up re difficulty, not quite the easy dash of last year anymore. Will be back next year.

Was the route the same as 2017?

No - but the bit they added also used part of the old route next to the railway line high up in the hills (not including the tunnel), just going the opposite direction

That's why the numbers are down.

I did this last year after skipping 2017 (did DBX instead) and I was disappointed with the route. This year seems to have some of the old route included but still not enough to sway most riders from doing DBX.

I would do this event instead of darling brew if the route was the same as 2017.

Also prefer the route with the tunnel, something very unique & fun - but as I said in an earlier post - that is like literally 30 seconds of the race so not a deal breaker for me.

Personal preference is a smaller well organised event over the large crowds at Darling but maybe a different date will be a good idea for organisers to not compete with such a successful event closer to CPT
