I have Avid Elixer R brakes on my MTB (second hand)

These brakes are terrible (compared to the SLX I had on my old bike). Google suggests that it is a SRAM / Avid thing.

I am considering some TRP Slate T4 or G Spec Slate (G spec referring to Aaron Gwinn).

These brakes are very well priced compared to Hope or even Avid Level. They also have a SRAM to TRP matchmaker.

Anybody have experience of the TRP brakes?

Yes I have a set on my Reign. I've got the G Spec Slates.

They work for me. Not Thaaaat powerful but modulation is great and there's more than enough power for my needs. A poor man's XT if you will.

I don't run the TRP rotors. I run shimano floating rotors. 180 rear and 203 front.

Also look at the Formula Cura's. Fared very well in a group test on some website recently. I'll try find the link. The Slates featured very badly.

Hi JacBrand

I recently fitted a set of G Spec Slates on my Levo.... they haul that fat cow up no problem!

I can recommend them, great feel/modulation and a lot of stopping power.

Easy to get pads, same as Shimano Saint/Zee they use mineral oil and bleed the same

as Shimano.

PM Edge Design on the forum he mays still have a set available???

Cheers

What is so terrible about them?

I had a 2nd hand set I used when I first built my bike up, used it as I bought them, and they were problem free for almost two years. Ran them with Quaxar 180mm rotor fron, 160mm rear, and Quaxar Carbon Metallic pads. Not a squeal or a shudder was experienced...

Passed them on to a friend who used it on a budget build for his son, and they are still serving him well.

Edit; Used them on the J2C 9 day stage race, and even though I took spare pads with, I returned with the spare pads still sealed. Going down Umko Drop, with slower riders infront of me, they retained their feel, and no performance drop off.

This tread is not a slate of Avid brakes. The ones on my bike are not in good condition and I would like to replace them. The levers are very hard.

In the meantime, I am replacing the pads and rotors until I can afford a new disk brake set.
