Verkykerskop is the beautiful destination and host of the Gravel Grand Prix launch event and is only three hours’ drive from both Johannesburg and Durban, some 45km north of Harrismith on the R722, lies Verkykerskop Village, nestled among the table-top mountains of the Drakensberg escarpment. The village is surrounded by Aansluit Landgoed, a 700 ha working farm and conservation area. Verkykerskop offers peace, tranquility and adventure to families, friends, corporates and artists. The hospitality and the pleasures of the countryside will surely make you fall in love with Verkykerskop.

Format:

2 Day Stage Race. Both days will start and finish in Verkykerskop

​

Route Distances and Elevations:

Day 1 (Saturday, 27 October) - 70km | 1050m ascent

Day 2 (Sunday, 28 October) - 56km | 880 ascent

Start Times and Registrations:

Registrations will be on Friday, 26 October from 17h00 to 20h00 as well as Saturday morning, 27 October from 06h00 to 07h30

Race start will be at 8h00 on both mornings.

The route will be marked so a navigational device is not compulsory. The GPS route files will will however also be supplied to each participant closer to the time.

Fantastic area. Lots of green scenery. Can get big storms and stunningly cold if a late front blasts through.

Pity they insist on the catering package. I would love to do the event but rather travel in from Harrismith each day where I would stay at the Bergview caravan park. But R1800 for the rides, plus the meals I would not eat plus the cost of travel is too high for 2 days.

Pity.

Any chance of a ride only entry fee?

Definitely my new frontier. GravelGrinding is the way to go in SA. I will be there.

Chris, we will be adding an "entry only" option. The reason why we included the meal package as part of the entry is because there are no alternative places to eat in Verkykerskop and most people wil stay there. But if some people will be staying outside and drive in on both days, we will definitely add the option for you.

The Gravel Grand Prix Cycling Series is SA's very first gravel cycling series and has been designed to create the perfect weekend breakaways to the beautiful country side for all types of cyclist and their supporters. 

The series will kick off with an exclusive 2 day launch and media event over the weekend of 27 and 28 October at the beautiful and unique hamlet of Verkykerskop in the Eastern Free State. This will offer the ultimate country charm and authenticity with family and supporters being able to join in the weekend fun, vibe and "kuier".
