As much as I strongly disagree with the sentiments of OP and cannot fathom why you would save your "better" bibs for race day, which is when compared to training a very small part of the time you spend on the bike. I can suggest First Accent as a budget friendly decent bib (budget friendly of-course subject to the person), but even this is most likely around R800 - R1k.

Also if you check this post in time, OneDayOnly is running a 50% off on Nalini bibs for their lunchtime deal (I just received the email) at R799.00.

PS. I do not know the brand so cannot comment on whether they are any good.

Thanks, I just jumped on that deal like a day kid on a cupcake, nalini bibs are great. I have one that was my fave bin until it became see-through after 4 years. Still ride it under my baggies.

Now I can't wait until I receive the fresh one.

I know these are just outside of your budget, but I've been very happy with my Enjoy Fitness bibs. Made in South Africa. Have the dual bibs and the Reptilia bibs. No complaints from my side.

The shirts are also really good.

See they also have Trail shorts and trail type long sleeve shirts.

Ordered a pair of Tenn bibs from Sportsworld at approximately 09:30 this morning. They were delivered 15min ago!

Thought I'd give them a try at R650 delivered. Plus being a UK brand I was hoping they'd be a little thicker & warmer. My Enjoy bibs are super comfy, but feel a little thin for winter in the Cape.

I was a little concerned about potential fit issues, ordered a L as per my usual fit (non-Italian brands). Fit seems good, shoulder straps are a little tight, but that's a frequent problem I have with having a long torso.

Legs are a little shorter than my various other bibs, going to have to hope for some spring sun to erase my old tan lines..

Will take them for a ride tomorrow & update this post.

Oh, nice touch with the lip-ice Sportsworld.

Well good for u, I would quit cycling if I had to wear that. I hope its becuase you had no choice, becuase if u can afford it, draffing uit for a ride with those Mr P goed with your knaters hanging out and everytime you get out the saddle you chamois moves down to your hips, is simply unexceptable. What you spend on cycling shorts People spend on a bottle of Gin. Get in the game my man!

I find the MrP shorts to be acceptable for training purposes. They fit decently enough andto are decently comfortable they just don't seem to make the bibs anymore.

Listen, no one is looking down on anybody here, my problem is the fact that OP is UNWILLING to spend the absolute minimum in my opinion, hence the quote, “Wrong Sport dude”. If he had said thats what his budget allows him to spend, different story. Again, if you cant justify spending a 1000 smackers on bibshorts because “they will just get thrashed after lots of millage”, which makes no sense btw.. then maybe cycling is not for u. But Anywayz, just to prove my point, if theres a budget constraint here, I will personally send the OP new shorts >1000. Address please.

I don't see why I have to spend 1000 on shorts. I race elite in SA. Finished the 100 cycle challenge a minute off of Nolan Hoffman's time. I just rode the Lowveld Tour on my First Ascent endurance bibs and my MrP kit. Although I was off the pace at the Lowveld tour it was due to illness not because I was wearing 2000 cheaper shorts than the winner. While I am sure that the Assos and all those fancy 2k bibs are nice and comfortable. It's not going to make me faster. By saving some nosh on shorts as an un-sponsored elite it means I can use the money to enter another event, pay for a repair, or save towards an upgrade that would make a significant difference. Just because I am not willing spend a grand on shorts doesn't mean I am in the wrong sport. And if there are those that think I am in the wrong sport because I don't find value in dropping a grand on shorts I'll be glad to take a ride with you. You in your expensive bibs and lil old me in cheapie shorts. I'll have you blowing through your FTP before I'm breaking a sweat. Expensive Shorts don't make you a Peter Sagan or a Froome

Thanks all for for thethe suggestions!

I see there are some good recommendations here that I will check out. I understand there are those that can't understand why I want to save expensive shorts for races. But as I posted earlier if I wear out cheap shorts they are simply cheaper to replace and the saved bucks go somewhere else. For weekday rides of two to two and a half hours a cheap short is acceptable. For long weekend rides and races where comfort is more important than I'll gladly use my FA's or my more expensive kit.
