There is a lot of good advice but take out of that what suits your training schedule . One thing you must do at least two weeks before the event is to do a 160km ride at current fitness level and use that time as your guide . You will always do a bit faster time in a race as you have the protection of a bunch at times to ride in  . As was stated don't go out too enthusiastically fast . A computer is a must to gauge time and average speed needed to do the ride . Stick to the plan . Remember when Bruce Fordyce was in his prime , he never looked like winning in the early stages of the Comrads because he stuck to his plan and pace  and the early leaders blew up .Good luck and give us feedback on this thread .
