Add in depreciation and you will find out it's more expensive per km than your car...... perhaps SARS will accept a tax deduction?

If you only get 50000 kms out of a set of BF's you are throwing too many doughnuts around traffic circles and should move to the East Rand

If you actually use your 4x4 off road (parking on the sidewalk at the mall doesn't count) especially in rocky terrain it's not far off.

Or are you someone who rides a big bakkie with lift kit 4x4 bumbers and snorkel for when Noah returns or compensating for something.????????????

Point is everything is expensive you can walk anywhere and save a ton of money or drive your vehicle in comfort. Same with your mtb you can run the trails and save a lot of money but remember there's no free wheeling down hill and I am still to see a runner smile...

Is this really relevant to add if it applies to both vehicles and bikes?

If it were for tax purposes you would factor it in so now you can't get tax benefit does that mean it is not a cost anymore.

Major depreciation I would say - so a cost.

Bike parts are expensive. R180 odd Rand for set of cheap brake pads..a little more expensive for my car but size wise....come on....tyres...R500 odd for a bike tire IF you shop about...R650 for a car tyre...again look at the size...chains R300 for a cheap 9 speed...R400 odd for a motor bike one...disc rotors...sprockets...even lubes...Bel Ray 500ml motorbike lube at a mates shop is R170. Small bottle of lube at your bike shop...a lot more I'll wager..

I do think we get screwed over but that's the price you have to pay for fun and fitness I suppose! Shop around and do the work yourself and it's not too bad.

You make a good point, motor spares and parts are relatively cheap, so use it where you can.

Don't buy bicycle specific cleaning brushes etc, buy them at auto trader. Heck, I bought 2L of engine degreaser for something like R40, I shudder to think what bicycle degreaser would cost.

I made my own chain wax compound, check YouTube, simple really. 5 candlesticks and some lamp oil, done, sorted for life!

Uhm trailrunning (not on the sidewalks at the mall)... +-R2800 / 850km = R3.29/km, and still no free wheeling... I get your point though, spend money on what floats your boat
