Road tyre prices - what happened

Hi all.

Went to purchase a set of Continental Grand Prix II tyres this morning.

Shock of my life. The prices seemed to have almost doubled since my last purchase in November last year.

Paid approx R450 each last time, now running at just below R800 discounted.

A tyre for my car will cost less and will last probably 6 to 7 times longer.

What on earth has happened?

I need a new tubeless road tyre and I have no choice but to spend around R1K for it. Prices for anything cycling related have become scary. Supply and demand or poor economy?

Is that for a set, and purchased locally.?

If so, let me know where and what.

Most good tubeless I've seen is around R1k each.

Allow me to explain, in cycling, we dont charge market or product worth. We always charge what people are willing to pay, 300 000 gators have gone out for that price so why change ?

Example: 10 years ago the market was tested on a 100k road bike, and what did the typical egoistical cyclist with money do, they bought it...

Those test have gone on till they reached >200k, and u know what, people are still willing to pay, so why change the price?

Same with Assos, a Cento, in my opinion the best bib ever made costs >4000, and people and myself pay it, so why change?

Same with the epic, price goes up every year, people are on a waiting list to pay, so why change? Get my drift? No need to reply, just absorb the truth

As much as I would rather support the local guys, when Chain Reaction can do 2 GP 4000s for £58 (R1100) you have to wonder.  If you get a mate to buy with you and the order is over £100, shipping is free too.

Think it is likely to be rand rate more so than distributor, last gators I paid R550 ea, saw them the other day in Cycle lab, think they were about 7 or 8 hundred, was looking at 28 size this time so thought they may cost more due to size, meanwhile prob cause rand got a kick in the goons recently.

Good luck with that. When last have you bought via CRC, Could have a nice surprise when they eventually get here and you have cough up to Skynet. Add VAT and suddenly that R650 price tag will look a lot more attractive.
