Been watching a lot of Seths Hacks and Single Trail Seeker Youtube videos the last couple of weeks and I see they love Diamondback backs. Now obviously this is not the DB we know and don't love.

Same brand or are the local ones ripoffs?

The Release 2 looks amazing and fairly priced. Anyone have any views on it?

Diamondback caters for all types and markets.  They make everything from "don't touch that thing with borrowed braai tongs" to "don't touch that 'cause I can't afford it"...

As with most nice things, just not a significant enough footprint in South Africa...

A brand manager of one of the big brands told me that SA is a big player in the "high end" market. Our total market is tiny, but we are one of the biggest when it comes to high end bikes.

Personally, I think the reason brands like Diamondback won't make it in SA, is because our market is so focused on certain brands (Spez, Giant, Scott). The majority of people won't look elsewhere. Kinda like Toyota and VW.

I've noticed that many people avoid brands like GT, Diamondback and Silverback because of perceived status.

Buy a 40k Diamondback and people think you're a rookie because you ride a Makro bike

That said, the Release is super tempting. Also looking at Canyons and other box brand bikes. If only my wallet felt the same way I do

in 1992 this was the relatively entry level MTB to get - think it sold for around R1350
