Suggestions on matching front 2.25

Sliced my rear tyre at Kings Kloof today, and I'm wondering what to match my current front with. I realize there lots of posts on tyres, buT none mentioned having a skinny rear like I currently have, or my current brand.

Currently :

Vee Tire Co. RAIL Custom Logo, 72tpi Folding Bead, Tubeless

Front: 29 x 2.25, Rear 29 x 1.95

Momsen hardtail

Considerations:

I ride on mixed terrain. Modders, Thaba, Red Barn, with some stage races on the cards in 2019

As you can see my rear is rather skinny. I have no issues with it, but never ridden anything else so I have no references.

Was looking at -

Maxxis Crossmark Folding

Maxxis Ardent

Conte Race King

I'm not a heavy rider (65kg) and am keen on something a bit tougher as I often take the wrong line (read I'm still working on my ability and handling)

Any thoughts?

I had Maxxis Crossmarks for years until worn out and it was only until I put Conti Race Kings on that I realised how crap they were. MC had no grip where it mattered (steep ascents). Usually slid out while Conti’s do the job perfectly, especially in fast corners too. Conti is 100% rubber and that’s why the tread can move and change according to the terrain. Shortly put, I will stick to Conti for a loooong time.

I'm not too worried about a few extra grams. Happy to get to the finish line without incident even if a bit slower.

Thanks for the posts so far. Food for the thought

Hi,

Going on the assumption we’re looking for XC orietated tires here...

You’d probably be better served to stick Vee Tire Co. Rail on the back (if your frame has the clearance) and then look for something more aggressive on the front like a Maxxis Ardent as you mentioned. Maxxis also make a Ardent Race which is plenty grippy. Or you can go for a Vittoria Barzo which also has plenty grip.

Maxxis come with an EXO protection option and Vittoria now come out with a “tougher” Cape Cobra casing both should hold up pretty well.

When your back tire does wear down you can look for something like a Maxxis Aspen or Ikon. From Vittoria side a Mezcal or Saguaro should do fine.

Remember grip also has a lot to do with tire pressure so don’t overlook that.

Good luck!

Ardent Race is really good if you want something a little faster rolling than an Ardent.

One of my fave combos is Ardent Race front and Ikon rear. Perfect balance of tough and fast for XCO/XCM.

So I should move my front Vee to the back then, and get something better on the front? I like that suggestion. Think that could work well.

Well that's what I would do  .

But let us know what you decide to go for in the end!

Leaning towards this option. Current front has a nice rolling pattern and wider than my current rear. Should work well.

Leaning towards Ardent in the front. Will let you know. Thanks again for the suggestions

Forgot to mention my choice in the end :

Moved the current front to the rear and got Maxxis Ardent in the front now.

So far I'm really chuffed. More grip and enjoying the feel of it. Thanks for all the advice everyone ????????

I have put a CST Patrol 2.25 on the back of my hardtail XTC. Unlike Maxxis (who own CST) who build medium volume tyres, this offers high volume with wide knob spacing. A nice centre line of knobs forms a tight, continuous and alternatively (either side of the centre) spaced ridge that gives a fast rolling action but tons of grip. The mid-side knob spacing is sparse with strong side knobs. It is a fast and (so far) robust tyre.

I use Specialized Ground Control Grid 2.1 on the front. As it is a very high volume tyre it gives me more than enough comfort and maximum grip in corners.
