Budget MTB with option for single speed

I am in the market for a new bicycle, but I am looking for something sub R5000 (or as close as possible to it). I am moving to CPT in the coming year, and want a bike that I can ride the trails there with. However, single speeds/fixed gears have been tickling my fancy, and I was therefore wondering if there are any options that would allow for a SS conversion later on (i.e. horizontal/sliding dropouts).

A Cotic Simple is the first thing that comes to mind. It is basically a Solaris with horizontal dropouts. It's steel, lekker geo that can handle XC and trail riding, as well as being bullet proof.

I picked a frame up for around 3k a while back, and have sold it since then. Very bleak that I did because they are rare (people hold on to them), and Cotic no longer make them - but if you can get one that would be a winner!

Edit: Stay away from fixed gear bikes for trails, recipe for disaster.

With brief being

-sub 5k

- geared at first than convert to SS

no other realistic option

You can use chain tensioners with a hanger to convert an ss bike to geared as easily as you can use a tensioner to convert a geared bike to an ss bike - plus there is no ugly tensioner when it is in ss mode.

Smile - I hear you , now to find a SS bike and covert to geared for under 5k

I have been keeping an eye on the classifieds for an ss specific frame, at that price they are like rocking horse poo. you are going to have to either up you budget or grab a cheap geared 26er and do the conversion when you are ready.

Why not just go SS from the start and spend your money on the important bits : Frame & wheels.
