The bad ride

I've had the same thing happen. Eventually found out my iron levels were low. Could also be low magnesium or potassium. Whatever it is I would definitely try find the cause and not ignore it. Very easy to dig a big hole for yourself trying to swallow htfu tabs instead of finding the cause.

Seconded. When I'm having tougher days than expected, I often pop iron supps and feel better in a couple of days

so i looked at the numbers more closely this am.

i'm comparing figures from all my rides indoor and road sessions included against my best efforts for the last 2 months.

i'm fairly certain on a mtb its not possible to get very close to PB's so lets keep that in mind.

this is just so we get some context.

below are what i managed compared to best efforts for the last 2 months.

30sec - 47% of best

1min - 51%

5min - 71%

10min - 67%

20min - 76%

30min - 77%

1hr - 85% (i have not done many 1hr sessions so this figures is skewed)

pretty dramatically far off the pace considering my HR averaged 84% for the entire ride.

best guess is a gastro issue from something i ate. amazing how much it can influence performance.

after the race i had the normal exercise induce hack - this lasted throughout the rest of the day.

my legs feel tired, just like they would after a big effort ride.

and this morning i feel fine, still got a slight cough though. not uncommon for me after a taxing ride.

Furbz, there could be something wrong with your nose ?

i do suffer with allergies, but have not had any issues of late.

When you started out was your plan to stick to power numbers or go with the pack?

in a race - go with the pack for sure.

the plan was to race as hard as i could and if i pop later in the ride at least i have got some race pace training in.

sticking to power numbers is for training rides and froome

well my legs just refused to go.

i struggled to hold a 80% effort and was dropped half way up the first hill breathing hard and with a heart rate that was through the roof. it averaged 168 for the 2h22 and my power figures were the same as an average pedal around ride.

i really had to dig deep on the last 2 hills to ride at a 70%.

the strange thing was it was not a "bonk" i just had nothing in me

I had almost exactly the same: heart rate through the roof but no power output to show for it. Second last hill I had to stop 80% of the way up because I though I was going to vom (I didn't thankfully).

I blame the hangover though, was super dehydrated afterwards. Drank the coke at the finish, a full bottle of water on the way home and two bottles of rehidrate once I got home plus some fruit juice that I had in the fridge and had to take a nap on top of this before I started feeling vaguely normal again. Before the nap I had one or two cramps while just lying on the couch and changing position (and I never cramp, had like 5 cramps my whole life before this).

You might want to get a "second opinion" on this.....

Just not the 'dutch oven with missus"

then you risking physical injuries in addition to having a bust nose.

I had the farts for most of the day.

No smell. But constant and unwavering.

Also have a headache panado won't touch

Sorry in advance for the overshare

There is a funny stomach virus doing the rounds. I felt exactly like that last week. After 2 days, it was over. My daughter had it bad. My wife was up with her almost all night last Thursday night.
