Hi all, I have posted another post about upgrading my rear V Brake to a disc brake but have been giving it a bit of alternative thought, is there anyway that I can upgrade my existing V brakes (Avid Single Digit 5) to provide more stopping power?

I have the same brakes as you! Mine are as shart as any disk brake. I think you need to look into better pads. I have very good RavX ones, made a huge difference over my old cheapies.

As per Para's post. No matter the brand of V-Brake, ifthe pads are lined up correctly, the cables are clean with a good quality pads, you good to go.

Tripple compound. I liked them on my road bike. Make sure they are set toe-in for better performance.

If I may... Ahem...

On my moab I struggled for a long time to get my V-Breaks to stop just right. In the end, I learned that it is about your Rims, Pads, Cables and Housing. The type of rim and the quality of the rim wall is very important. I discovered the DT Swiss 4.1XR Rim to be a very very good rim. The rim has grooves on the wall, allowing for maximum friction between the pad and the rim. When it comes to cables, the Alligator black cable and housing kit is simply unbeatable. Nothing compares.

Then, I tried the Shimano XTR Break blocks... what a waste of money. In the end I tried the BBB's, and man. They worked beautifully! The three compound is great. Not only for stopping power, but alse the shape and texture. Everytime you break, you effectively clean the rims!

Just my opinion...Big%20smile

Go for the Koolstop pads, they made a huge difference to my V's.

Also, make sure your rims are clean & free of oil/grease etc.. (fairly obvious I know, but it's always suprising what gets where..)

Yea the rim make a huge difference! I have those groves on mine and they really help

That groove does not do anything for braking. It goes the same direction as wht the wheel rotates and offers no friction at all. It is a wear indicator. The rim wall is safe as long as you see the line. By braking alot you wear down the metal of the rim and soon it will all be gone. So before you have a total rim failure, you can replace it.

You say you want to upgrade your brakes. What are wrong with the existing ones? I find it interesting that you want more stopping power when in fact I bet your existing brakes will make you do a faceplant if applied hard and sudden.

Brake quality is not so much a funciton of stopping - most brakes do that, but with modulaton, cable smoothness, resistance to fade, resistance to eating the rim, resistance to picking up aluminium and performance in dust.

Which of these problems to you experience?

Yes that is what the big black line in the middle is for. The lots of little groves are to help with breaking  in wet.
