90s Eddy Merckx

I have recently completed a long term project that started in 2014 when I came accross a 90s Alu Team frame in Lotto/Domo colours (or close to). It hung in a store room that had to be accesed via the fire escape.

The frame had never been built, but it had some scratches and chips from storage and it did not have a fork.

I still had some older components on the shelf, and kept an eye on the classifieds for the outstanding parts.

I managed to buy a set of wheels with Record (36 hole) hubs and blue anodized Ambrosio Giro dItalia rims, and a 1" carbon fork.

I did not want to fit a quil stem to a carbon steerer, and I also dislike the flexy steering feel. I decided to improvise with a Thomson stem and a carbon bar I had.

The leavers needed some restoration, and I had the bar and stem sprayed silver (it came out a bit more Ti coloured, but looks ok)

The fork was sanded down and painted to match the frame. The frame also got touched up, Lotto/Domo logos were added and then clear coated. Painting was done by Jared at BMC - quality work ????

All in all Im happy with the overall result - the bright old-school team colours draw a lot of attention and the occasional compliment when rolling around the Cape peninsula :)

It weighs 8.4 kg as shown. Im still looking for some appropriate bottle cages - some tubular ti would be ideal. Ive had Elite alu ones that corroded and the Elite stainless ones that broke.

No, seriously, I need that seat post for my Bititan! Poor thing has to face the world every day with a no name aluminium seat post. :(  ;)

That is such a lovely frame.

Here is the Team SC (the last frame to get 1-2-3 In Paris Roubaix) but also TdF Polka dot) I have had since new.

The leavers needed some restoration,.................

Who did the levers and how did they restore the worn away lettering?

^ Jared at BMC did them as well.they were sanded, epoxy resin added to fill deep scars. Lettering was then painted on, followed by a clear coat. He can refit new internals, too, but mine are still running good as ever. Record 10 was one of the best Campy gruppos imo.

Thanks. That is good to know.

Yes, I agree about Campy Record 10 Speed, but I'd say THE best groupset ever! Period! Thirty years from now people will confirm!

I can't conclusively say best ever, but certainly better than latest Dura Ace which I am regrettably now also running.

I suppose I shouln't say "ever" because I haven't tried the latest electronic marvels......and I'm not going to! One has to draw the line somewhere when it comes to being a grumpy old fart! :D  ;)

Agreed.

I have been riding my 10 speed Record equipped bike since before the millennium and they all work smoothly and reliably and MOST importantly, silently which is more than I can say for 2018 Dura Ace 2hich has been a real disappointment.
