When you buy a new pair of MTB shoes they normally have studs,  like rugby boot studs,  that can be fitted to the front of the shoe.

When do you fit them and what are they for?

When it is VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY muddy and then you still have to think twice about it. Chuck them and tighten the other screws.

Take them out. I used to ride with them for years (thinking that it would save the MTB shoe sole). They are just a pain in rocky conditions (when you walk) and also, they do not in reality save the sole of the shoe.

Thanks,

The reason I asked is because I saw that most of the front finishers at this years Epic all had them.

In fact it looked like Kevin and David and some of the overseas guys rode the whole race with them in.

It does not make any difference to your riding. It's when you have to walk when they play or do not play a part. How often do you walk in the mud? And how deep is the mud you're planning to walk in? You can only use their grip when you dig through all the muc and get to the harder ground underneath. Maybe it will work with grassy embankments.

They work great for discouraging dogs from biting me LOL. I find that they help on the really steep wild coast hills. But on the stony tracks in the WC, they don't help much.
