I think I'd stick to the main Cradle Route if I was still cycling there . . .

Lots of other trails in the cradle other than the main loop. Did about 65km on those today.

Wife showed me these pics as well.

It's in the tracks in the veld on the way to the Maggies farm (home of the chicken pie).

There is a house just above halfway down, and from the pics it seems to be behind that house.

Could be traps to create an easy target. Could also be an irate resident, tired of peeps traversing private land. Pure speculation at this stage.

Fact is, it's concerning, as I have used these trails on my ace, and so has the missus.

Those spikes look like they were made in a workshop so i doubt they placed by some vagrant looking to jack a bike - I'd agree with your point - PVT land owner gatvol of MX Bikes quads and MTBers trespassing his land.

Of course assuming the land they were found on is in fact pvt land, which, in that area i would hazard a guess that it is. Which begs the question, what were the riders who found them doing there ?

Damage to property 09h30 on 21 July 2019 North of Muldersdrift Gauteng South Africa: 2 cyclists cycling from the Home of the Chicken Pie toward the end of Beyers Naude road, rode over spikes along a path way deliberately concealed and placed on the ground undoubtedly to do damage. The victim, who lost 2 tyres in the incident, explained how at least 5 sets of spikes were laid along the path at approx. 5 metre intervals. The spikes were secured with tent pegs and covered with grass. The spikes were sharpened with the intent to cause damage. Smashed glass was also strewn over the path, together with bricks. Fortunately the cyclists managed to stay on their bicycles and not fall onto the next set of spikes. Possibly a case of attempt to cause GBH could be opened, however the victim will be addressing the issue with SAPS. Although there is no clarity on the motives behind the ambush tactics, we can only encourage Cyclists to be vigilant, and try always riding together with a friend. Keep our Help-line / whatsapp number on your phone 0834880400 for future reference. Let it be known that, despite the irresponsible actions of today, all tourists are welcome to the area, and we encourage dialog, common decency and respect.
