check the barometer/ altimeter before buying/selling - they do die (also on the 910xt and possibly Fenix 5)

sellers please post in your ad if there's a problem with the watch

(I think Garmin charge about R1500 currently to test and replace the watch if it is faulty.)

There is a test screen you can open that tells you if altimeter is working.

There are two ways into the test menu on the 920xt:
1) Turn watch off....press and hold 3dot button while turning watch on
2) Press 3dot button while removing from usb cradle

Go in service mode: first power off > press and hold the 3dot button while pressing power on
Check:
*Temp - temperature
*ROM and RAM tests - pass
*Press up-arrow button - vibration
*Press down-arrow button, till Barometer Test - Local Pressure is around ?, Local Altitude is your altitude (shouldn't be 20000)

I have read that sometimes you can fix it if you clean the little hole between the 2 front buttons (but that won't work if the altitude is showing 20000 - it's already dead, not dirty).

The altitude will show correct GPS altitude before starting an activity, but as soon as you press start it switches over to barometric altitude - there is no way to change this default on the 920xt.

You can manually select correct altitude in Garmin Connect and Strava for each activity - but it is not an ideal solution. And there is no option in Garmin Connect or Strava to automatically correct altitude for each activity that you upload.

Just had the same issue with my 935. Barometric altimeter and temperature sensor is apparently 1 unit and it just failed. Altitude is stuck on 20000m and temperature on 294°.

Need to take it in to Garmin to have it checked/replaced but I'm currently in the middle of training for Ironman 70.3 so the timing is not ideal...

Out of warranty?

Was hoping the 935 would hold out better - just got mine now.

Garmin in Rosebank are very efficient - they sorted out my 920xt and my Edge 500 in under 24hrs (was actually same day service in the end).

Yeah, got it about 18 months ago.

I called them last week when this happened and they said up to 4 business days turnaround which is not ideal in the middle of a training block. Everything else seems to work fine (although the battery life seems a little shorter now) so I'm just gonna keep using it until my 945 arrives in 2 weeks :)

How you getting the 945 in 2 weeks?  I have checked Amazon and Clever Trading in USA and both say you can pre-order as only available from 30 May??

Any idea if there is a similar check method for other garmin watches, like vivoactive 3?

I'm pretty sure Vivoactive 3 doesn't have barometric altitude? (and that's usually the main issue with a second hand Garmin I think)

Wiggle and Aramex Global Shopper  . Obviously costing a bit more with extra shipping and 2x VAT but I think it's worth it to get it 2 months earlier
