Hi there,

1. Why are 26x1.5 tubes referred to as junior tubes? Its so confusing for new cycling fans who are not juniors...

2. What size tubes can I/should I buy for 26 x1.5 tyres? Decent slime ones... Can you put a slightly bigger tube inside that size tyre?

#Moderatelyconfused

(Sorry for all the doff questions)

Never heard of the term junior tubes but basically the 26 is the wheel size. Then the 1.5 is how wide the tube is. So if you running a tyre that is 1.5 wide then this is ideal. But that is fairly narrow. Usually a tube will be 26 x 1.5-1.8(for eg) so you "should" use that tube in any tyre that is that width. I stand to be corrected but I think the most common tyre width for 26 is 2.0/2.1 and the ideal tyre for that is a 26 x 1.90-2.20. What size tyre are you wanting to fit this 1.5 tube in?

I thought it odd, but the Cyclelab website refers to them as Junior tubes...hmmm.

I have just bought 26x1,5 chen shin slicks, and was hoping that my existing tubes would fit for now...I have currently 26x2.10 tyres (Presta width) with a 27.5 tube inside i think....bike was secondhand - no clue what was inside. I was trying to avoid buying more tubes just yet lol

My rule of thumb has always been 26x1,5 if you are running MTB slicks and 26x1,95 for any other tyre (I usually run a 2,1 or 2,25 tyre) No issues so far. The 26 x 1,5 tube will work in a 2,1 tyre but because it needs to stretch to a bigger diameter the wall will tend to become thinner and therefore more prone to snake bites and punctures.

I really need to get off my arse and do a tubeless conversion.....

Who calls them junior tubes? News to me!

As far as I know... Any 26" tube will work. They are not exactly precision made items. Just ask the shop for 26" slimed tubes and you should be good to go. Kenda make one off the top of my head. Best to try and get running tubeless as soon as you can. A lot less issues in ones life.

So if I buy, Kenda 26x1.5 - that is 'ideal' - but if I have a wider tube  - say (26x1.75 or higher) - would they fit??? Tyres are a 26x1.5 chen shin for now

Grebel! That is the info i need. I have just got the chen shin 26x1.5 slicks - what tube will fit? I have been told to get a variety (sum1 said 1.9 would fit - my brain doesnt get this...)but I dont know what is best. The valve has to be a Presta - the rim hole is tiny, and I would prefer to be slimed...thoughts?

Use the 26 x 1,5 tubes with the slicks. (You will battle to fit the 1,9 into a slick. It will go in but it's like trying to put a marshmallow through a keyhole....)

From my experience it is easier to get a Presta valved 26" tube nowadays. Most pumps do both so it isn't an issue. Just be careful to to bend the head too much. That can break the head off (It's made from brass so not too strong) Maybe get a Presta to Schrader adapter at the same time so you can top up air at a garage forecourt.

Sportsmans sell slime tubes. Pretty sure most bike shops will sell them but be prepared top pay a premium and if the hole is too big for the slime to fill they are leaking you throw them away. They are a nightmare to patch compared to std tubes.
