Chad scanning the thread I dont see their ages. (?)

Maritz is averaging about 13 to 15 months per frame size (from age 5 to 8) ...

As much fun as such a project is .... it is a money pit, and you wont get your money back.  Saying that, I would do the Mongoose project again in a hart beat

Then again, depending on their ages you could build a bike for the older one, to be passed on the younger ..... getting some miles for your effort

On another note .... Maritz's first 20'' was bought at Makro - TOTEM, rigid frame.  First thing I did was a strip down and rebuild.  Just making sure the bearings are lubed, everything at the correct tolerances, etc .... Three years later, couple of trails, and lots of kids riding it, the TOTEM is working perfectly !  The problem with "cheap" bikes are the school kids assembling it ....

Uhm ... ja  ....  :whistling:     Just make sure you check the bike AND frame size before doing such a project ....    Maritz LOVES riding the Mongoose on the trainer !!    Thanks to the stand-over height of the medium frame he wont be riding it on any trails for at least another year .....    Now looking at a Titan 24-9er (26'' with an extra small frame) ....

Chris, I am honestly not 100% sure what their ages are, I think its 10 and 13

The younger one is on a 26" wheeled bike, not sure of frame size, the older one is on a 29" Medium frame, and they manage just fine on them, I know the bikes are too big for them though, but they ride them without any complaints.

The hope is to get them bikes, whether we must build them or get "ready to ride" bikes and give their old bikes to their friends.

Also trying to teach them to respect their new bikes by making them "pay" for them themselves, they each have about R1000 saved and I will give them R1000 each for their old bikes, come December when their mom and dad give them each some moola for the holidays they should have about R3k each, well I hope they have that much at least, and I will help them the best I can for the rest of the cash they need for bikes

Perfect !!  At least they should get a few years use out of those bikes.

And a big YES to teaching them respect for the bikes.

Maritz knows, if there is mud, he MAY ride through it.  He may have a blast out on the trails .... he also knows the cleaning routine afterwards .... most of the time he now rides around the mud, but every so often we just have fun and enjoy cleaning the bikes afterwards.

In Gauteng, Germiston.

If you were in Pretoria, I could have donated a few parts.

I am starting to clean out my study / workshop. If something happens I don’t want to leave my wife with the cleanup mission

I have enough parts that will probably make up 65% of a bike don't mind teaching a bit either

Are you in Gauteng though? What would you want for what you have, if you are willing to part with it that is?

It might be old, but have a 3x9 LX set. The hydraulic kind. Want to give it to someone who will care about the gear set.

Not going to use it. Lets call it a pay it forward.

If it was not for the blokes and gals of BikeHub I would be dead

Just thought I would give an update regarding this search.

I have been searching and searching for a decent frame etc for reasonable prices, but have come up short, however, I think I have found 2 complete bikes that fit the bill pretty well, will be scooping them up asap, stripping them down, and then rebuilding them with the kids.

Just want to say thanks to RobertWhitehead and Cois for their offers on parts.

Hey again gents, so I got bikes but now have hit a real snag that I didnt pick up when I got the 1 bike, the forks on the one bike are pretty much toast, so anybody know where I can find a 26" straight steerer fork? Checked the classifieds but the only fork there, while not THAT expensive, is way over what I can afford at the moment

I have a Manitou Magnum that I was about to throw away at home that you are welcome to.  Came off my Giant ATX 860 from back in the day, so has disk and V-Brake bosses.  Coil fork.  I'm in Alberton, so not too far for you to collect.  Let me know if you're interested.  Pic below is off the interwebs, for reference.
