The Ouzo Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 I had been cycling for many years (and often had strong opinions here on the hub about entry fees that are too high) before I helped out in organising a race myself (for a local school). Was a real eye opener on how much work is involved (and the costs that the general public is not aware of). Only way that race is sustainable is because loads of parents & pupils give up their time for free (if they had to be paid the race would run at a loss) + we have a free venue. (and even though the race is successful I am convinced there are far easier ways for the school to raise money) Public perception about value for money is what it is though, it is becoming harder to attract entrants and no point raging against it. But personally I will always say to pay R500 for a ride on closed roads through the heart of a large city (while contributing to a charitable cause) should be worth it for anyone who is passionate about cycling. the bold bit with the costs outlined above, how much is really left for that charitable cause ?
shaper Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 the bold bit with the costs outlined above, how much is really left for that charitable cause ?You will have to ask 94.7 cycle challenge for their audited accounts... else is all hearsay. But as you seem to think it is excessive... speak with your wallet and ride elsewhere that day... you will probably have it to yourself

Talking about volunteers, with the Sani2c, the locals basically run the race villages for 3 days straight, I take my hat off for them, ever thankful for there good work.
shaper Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 uhm, maybe go back and re-read my posts before assuming what I think.I am just asking questionsAnd you expect to get factual answers from a forum where no one is actually connect to or involved with 94.7 and how they derive their price and spend the money? So actually more curious with regard your angle of questions... especially as every answer is guesswork or hearsay...

shaper Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 by that reasoning I should not ask questions on here about anythingThe reasoning is that your questions will not get factual answers and lead to probably speculation....which leads to wildly incorrect ranting........ Sometime silence is the best option......
The Ouzo Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 The reasoning is that your questions will not get factual answers and lead to probably speculation....which leads to wildly incorrect ranting........ Sometime silence is the best option......is that not the case with 99% of questions on any internet forum. you seem very touched by this subject. Lets put some perspective here.i've entered the 947 20 times, have ridden 16. Same numbers apply for CTCT.Even when I was unemployed I still paid the entry fees.Expensive is relative to your circumstances As for my questions, there are a few folk on here that are on race committees, even if they cant give factual data they can give a rough idea.

If you get an answer of 100%, 55% or 0%... you be happy with the answer? Probably not and you are unlikely to get the answer, but keep asking your mute questions! Yes there are many that organise races, and each race is individual with regard to organisation, size and expenditure.....so each answer will be different.
Dexter-morgan Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Fight !, fight fight!.................oh no wait its not Friday yet.
scotty Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Cant comment for all races, but those I've been involved in running and cycling held for charity/cause all funds left over after costs(Metro, medals, timing company etc) are donated not % and the orgs do not take a slice.
Frosty Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 True, if an event breaks even its successful. Many races have disappeared due to not been economically viable. Transvaal Galvanizers used to host a MTB event for charity along the same tracks as your race but sadly sponsorship and rising costs make it uneconomic and very little or nothing when they run at a loss left for charityAthol never got many entries for the TVL Galvanisers race, but his overheads were nowhere near what ours are, but it is still amazing he made it work. We actually got a lot of help from him when setting up our MTB race, and hopefully we’ll be able to buy his route signage from him.
love2fly Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Yip, well a service provider actually...Have you been part of a race organizing committee?
CharlesZ Posted October 17, 2019 Posted October 17, 2019 since when did you enter for a goody bag. You enter the race to ride/race it and to enjoy time on your bike. Alot of the money goes for organising the vent and have full road closures that is actually very expensive. Yes the price is high but rather skip on a few beers or cigarettes and help the cause that do raise alot of money for different charity groups Us South Africans just love to moan about the biggest crap. As also mentioned by others, rather give it to charity. We don't understand what it is to have nothing
