ORCA Posted June 26, 2008 Share S.T.I.A Shimano buzzword standing for "System Total Integration". This normally is used to refer to Shimano's combined brake lever/shift lever systems, particularly those designed for dropbar handlebars. S.T.I. is similar to Campagnolo's Ergo system. S.T.I. uses the main brake lever, pushed inward, to select larger sprockets, and a smaller, auxiliary lever inside the brake lever to select smaller sprockets. http://www.sheldonbrown.com
slowgo Posted June 26, 2008 Share Thanks Ewep - what if it's not a Shimano product ? - do I take it that the word is generally used as an abbreviation for the "shifters " on the bike - cheers

AndreZA Posted June 26, 2008 Share The correct term is "Brifters" = Brakes + Shifters. Shimano = STIScampy = Ergo leversSram (not shram or es-ram) = thingys that makes the chain goes from one thingy with tooth to another thingy with tooth. TNT1 Posted June 26, 2008 Share Thanks Ewep - what if it's not a Shimano product ? - do I take it that the word is generally used as an abbreviation for the "shifters " on the bike - cheers No, The S in the STI stands for Shimano... If the product is made by someone else, then by definition, calling it an STI is a mi-nomer
lowracer Posted June 26, 2008 Share in general, you can call them "brifters" that is for the combo of brakes and shifters.
