Hi guys,

I have a Bianchi Infinito C2C that we acquired as a "starter bike" for my wife. The frame is in very good condition by the look of it. The bike is SRAM Red 10 speed. The issue is that it has a race crankset on it – 53/39, which is probably going to be a bit much for my wife on the hills, at least in the early days. Unfortunately, because of the BCD, we cannot simply fit 50/34 chain rings. The 50 will fit but the 34 will not because it needs the smaller 110 BCD. So we need to consider the possibility of changing the crankset.

The thing is that SRAM 10 speed crank sets are no longer available. The bottom bracket is PF30. So I am wondering whether an 11 speed SRAM RED 22 BB30 crankset will work. If I understand correctly, an 11 speed chainring should run fine with a 10 speed chain (the contrary is not true).

I would greatly appreciate whatever advice is available from the tech gurus on how we can best go about solving this particular problem.

Cheers,

Mudlark

Yes the RED or FORCE 11 sp crank will work. YOu can aso go down a notch to the Rival crank which is essentially the same as the Force crank.

The other alternative is to get a SRAM Rival WiFli rear derailleur and 12-32  cassette.

The 11 sp rear derailleur works with the 10speed shifters an vice versa

I suspect you have this the wrong way around -

11s crank - 11s chain - 10s cluster should be OK (shifting should be fine AFAIK)

11s crank - 10s chain - 10s cluster risks having the chain jam on the crank because the 10s chain is fatter than the 11s

Why would a 10 speed chain on an 11 speed chain ring jam? What's it going to catch on that is going to cause a problem? I can understand a 10 speed chain being a problem on an 11 speed cassette but I am not seeing the issue on the chainring.

Assuming there is an issue, then presumably I can simply run an 11 speed chain – the 11 speed chain should run fine on the 10 speed cassette and with the 10 speed rear derailleur, right? The article you quote refers to an 11 speed chain and 10 speed cassette combination in fact probably being quieter than a 10 speed chain/10 speed cassette combination.

Many thanks indeed Diesel. I was hoping that you would find a minute to chime in.

Agreed, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

As you mention, for improved shipping and a quieter drive train, an 11 speed chain would work really well

Thanks. The current chain is stuffed anyway. And I have a spare 11 speed chain here at home already.

complete and utter BS. I'm running this set up for 6years on training bike and other than the crap shifting of FSA chainrings the chain has never jammed anywhere.

I'v never ever encountered someone having this problem
