Hey guys maybe this has been asked before, but how do you define being fit? Is it a combination of resting, max and average HR? Does weight have anything to do with it? Frequency of exercise (as in how often should one?) How would I know if I am fit, or is it just a general term applying to many things? Is there guidlines to know if you are 'fit'?

I reckon it's when you feel confident and in control for whatever the physical challenge is you are tackling. This usually requires thousands of hours of dedication to gradual conditioning, physically, mentally and emotionally.

OR

It's when a woman is hot in modern youth-speak eg ? 'Oh my dog! How fit is that chick?!'

Sean good oneBig%20smile But I think you got a point about being confident with a challenge you have to face. So being 'fit' is also a mental thing I suppose?

A "regular" person's resting heart rate is 72. If you can beat that, you are more fit than average Joe Soap. Sitting at my desk right now, I'm at 61 beats. Park down infront of the TV for a while and it goes to mid 40's. Sleeping, a bit lower.

Probably not. But the heart being the engine, I'm sure its a good gauge. A while back I went to the hospital because I got chemicals in my eyes. They check your HR and blood pressure before they do anything. So they check my HR, but after having sit for a while waiting it was lekker low. So the nurse taps the display a few times looking worried. I ask her how much is it? I think it was like 52. She goes... its a bit low. I'm like, nah, it's just about right LOL

Getting fit according to your abilities to a lower heart rate can take weeks but to build hard core endurance for endurance sport  like cycling could takes years.

Correct Mampara, that is in the US-youth speak, Dawg. The Pom-youth use the term 'fit'.

I have a 10-year-old son that is a national champion Hip Hop dancer so am exposed to a (mostly U.S.) youth culture overload constantly via TV, music, fashion and language. Even my two-year-old son says 'Peace Out' with the little clenched fist when he goes to school...

You might have to take your lactate threshold in account as well, as it goes up as you get fitter. Rate of recovery also gets faster as you get fitter. VO2 max tests are pretty good indicators of fitness levels.

I agree resting heart rate cant be the ultimate judgement, but you can tell by the difference in your resting and max HR when you are fit or unfit. so it's a bit personal.

My resting HR is 35 sitting on the couch watching TV. I max on a bike at 170. When I'm unfit my Resting HR is around 48.

My HR monitor is new and I'm not sure if it can record, but I'll try get my resting HR tonight. I've maxed out though at 196 beats, but that was like 8 years ago, so I rate I'm late 180's now...
