If you running Magura disc brake do you stick to their rotors or can you use Shimano or another aftermarket product ?

Never thought buying a new wheel set would be such a learning curve !

You can buy whatever you like that will fit the hub and that will fit the diameter of the brakes. If you are byuing centrelock wheels (the Shimano system) you can get an adapter to use your old 6-bolt rotors on them.

Thats what i thought but apparently not !

Whats the point of aftermarket if you have to stick to original, the heat build up or something is an issue. Oh and you loose your warrenty

On my 'goose I've replaced the Tektro 160mm rotors with LX 160mm rotors. Works well, except that the brake pads go onto the 'spoke' of the rotor. Doesn't really bother me, and I'm also sure that they used to do that with the originals, so you should be fine.

Who was it that said you would loose your warranty for using different disk rotors(unless it was the distributer I'd say they're telling you rubbish and even then...)?

I have a bike with Avid Juicy7's with the original rotors, another with XTR calipers with an Avid wavy and a Magura superlight wavy and still another with Magura Julies with Alligator rotors (the Ninja star looking ones). They all work fine. In fact the only one's that even have original pads are the Avids!

Recently (this weekend) discovered non-compatibility:

XTR centre-lock rotors and Hayes 9 disc brakes......    sigh.  The tabby thingy on the Hayes pad gets hit by the 'spoke' of the rotor - which on XTR is black and chunky...

Nope.  turns out tis a known problem that xtr centre lock rotors are not compatible with all callipers.

problem solved by acquiring xt centre lock rotors.

Use shims to move the brake caliper further away from the centre of the hub.

I know the Juicy 5 use a 185 rotor and not a 180 which could cause a problem but if its a 180 and the replacement is a 180 there should be no problem.

Caould it be that they feel the heat dispersment on a another brand or aftermarket is not as good as their own

NO , they just feel that they need to sell as much as possible of their stuff to you and would use any excuse to do so !

They do the same with avids...... jus take a side cutter and snip of the caliper thingy......

Ok so magura say the shimano wont work and Shimano say the shimano wont work !

Mate - As I said I have used Alligator's as well as BBB's on my Magura Julies no problem. That includes XC races, Marathon MTB races as well as a 24 hour.

I am now using an Avid and a Magura on my XTR's and no problem.

You decide ...........................
