I think the ghost bikes and crosses with flowers are very positive things. Apart from being memorials to the victims of accidents they remind me that death and it's possibility is around all the time. Usually we don't like to acknowledge that perhaps?

The row of flowers on the corner in Tokai where a young girl was so brutally murdered comes to mind.
