Is the Edge 705 compatible with Powertap yet?

Just checking as I see conflicting reports on the web - some say one can just buy the powertap hub and use the Edge 705, while others say no - which is it?

I speak under correctyion, but i think a powertap hub isnt ANT SPORT 2.4+ compatible, which means it wont work with a garmin. Check out garmins webpage for a list of compatible devices.

The new Powertap will be compatible, just not sure when it's going to be launched.

I believe you may be able to upgrade the 2.4 system in the future?

At the moment they are not compatible.

The new 2008 product range will be compatible, to be released in a couple of months.

Older 2.4 units will be upgradeable to Ant+ and be compatible with the 705, the upgrade does not require the wheel to be sent in, i.e. the owner can do the upgrade.

That's aweseome. Any idea when and how existing owners can start upgrading?

Should be in the next month or two.  The upgrade process was done on the Garmin-Chipotle team before the tour, so the technology is working.

Bruce, any idea whether they are going to upgrade/improve the Powertap head unit in the near future so that it will not be necessary to purchase the 705.

Still waiting for clarity on this issue.  Strong market pressure for a new CPU that at least has an altimeter function on it, and a removeable memory card would also be very nice.  I suspect they will have a bit of a pricing problem, because the current CPU is nearly R2k.  Won't be much of a market if the price is too high, people will go for the 705 instead.

Note that the upgraded hubs will still be backward compatible with the older CPU's.

Firmware/software upgrade.  They'll provide a small tool (like a memory stick) that connects to the battery connector inside the hub and injects the new firmware.

And it won't be long before some bluetooth phones will be compatible.
