Happy new year!

any recommendations please on best maxxis tire combo for cape epic 24?

was thinking rekon 60tpi front, rekon race 120tpi rear… my partner considering rekon race pair but I’m concerned they’ll be too low profile (slick).

unfamiliar with conditions and terrain as flying in from UAE where I ride Aspens front and rear, thank you 🙏

78kg/180cm, 18-20 hrs riding a week, well trained and experienced in technical terrain and XCO racing…

·         Maxxis Ardent Exo Skinwall 29X2.4 60TPI MTB Tyres (front and rear) was my first choice but I have decided to go Vittoria combo instead.

70kg and 1.7 m height on steel frame bike

1.      Vittoria Mezcal III 29 x 2.35 XC-Trail G2.0 Cape Cobra Black MTB Tyre (rear)

2.      Vittoria Barzo 29 x 2.35 XC-Trail G2.0 Cape Cobra Black MTB Tyre (front)

Rekon / Rekon Race is a good combo for this area. Really enjoying the Specialized Fast Trak T5 at the moment on the rear and like the Continental CrossKing Protection. Both are really light and roll fast. Perfect for the dry, rocky trails.

Schwalbe Wicked Will  SuperRace or Specialized Ground Control T7 on the front are good alternatives to the Rekon - quite rounded profiles so roll fast but are relatively tough for the sharper rocks and give good grip.

If it's going to be a muddy year this year, then ignore all of the above tires...

I would go for IKON (Top Spec.) Front and Rear.

+1 for ikon.

You could also consider Ardent Race upfront and Ikon on the back.

Keep in mind this is my take and others' views might differ:

Versatile Tread Design: The Ikon has a tread pattern that's effective in a variety of conditions, including hardpack, loose over hard, and rocky trails, which are common in stage races.

Lightweight and Fast Rolling: Designed to be lightweight, the Ikon rolls quickly, aiding in maintaining speed and reducing rider fatigue over long distances.

3C MaxxSpeed Compound: Balancing grip and rolling resistance, providing an excellent compromise for stage races.

Durability and Puncture Resistance: The Ikon is known for its durability and features like EXO sidewall protection to resist cuts and abrasions, important in rugged conditions.

Proven Track Record: The Ikon has been used successfully in various marathon and stage races worldwide, adding to its credibility as a reliable choice for demanding events.
