Any opinions or advice on the following route, park at waterstone village and use the R44 into Stellenbosch then Helshoogte through to Franshoek

Bad idea / Good idea ?

I'm aware of the risks of Helshoogte but any other suggestions

Thanks

I have done it once last year in about November. It was fine. Wide yellow lines. My son rides it often and lives in Somerset West. I probably wouldn't ride in peak traffic.

Thank you, this would be on a weekend. We from the southern suburbs looking to ride that side for a change. I know many cycle from soneike in kuilsriver but I would like to avoid kayamandi

Most go via Bottelary, Kromme Rhee and R44 keeping some distance from Kaya.

Cycle it often on weekends. If you’re concerned about Helshoogte, try finding a riding partner/s. Winelands cycling club often do escorted group rides on weekends starting from Waterstone.

They do them every Saturday and Sunday, and have two follow cars to cater for different abilities. Visitors are welcomed, but if you become a "regular visitor" you'll eventually be asked to officially join the club.

I typically start out from the Bottelary side.

My return trip from Franschhoek often goes via Helshoogte then R44.  Sometimes I turn at the Strawberry farm towards Kuilsriver.  On a few occasions I have gone via Somerset West, then back to Bellville.

Hellshoogte climb ... just be wary of dodgy "pedestrians" ....  cross over to the other side if in doubt.

LOTS of cyclists ride Hellshoogte, so easy enough to wait at the robot / shopping centre, then join others for the climb.

ENJOY !
