Hi all, I cycled a lot about 30kg ago and have found a huge difference in the 1980's and 90's road frame sizes vs 2020 something MTB's.

I currently ride a Scott Aspect 25fs 26" which is about 15 years old in a Large frame. I was never fitted for the bike, it was a 2nd hand sale and felt ok so I took it.

I have lost 37Kg over the last year and back under 100Kg now and would like to ride more and upgrade my bike.

I want to get a Titan Cypher, specific model will depend on budget but I assume the frame geometry is all the same.

At 183cm tall the recommendation is a large frame. I can get an Xl at a good price. What would the downsides be?

I am 53 so not going to be a top end racer or tackle tough downhills at speeds that I don't find comfortable. 90% of my riding is on reasonably open trails and I typically do distances of between 30 to 60km on a Sunday ride.

Would it be a disaster for me to size up?

I am 181, I test rode a friends XL and bought a L, xl was far from comfortable for me. However there are more things to consider than just hight when buying, maybe organise a test ride?

It really is difficult to say without seeing you on a bike as sizing can depend on rider-specific body geometry. As a guideline, 183 puts you in the Large camp. Where are you based?

I am 190 cm and ride an XL frame Titan Carbon Cypher Pro RS. I initially looked at a L frame and took it for a test ride. It was clearly too small and I opted for an XL frame, which the bike shop sourced for comparison. I would think that you need to test ride a L frame and then make a decision, based on how you feel on the bike.  On your choice of brand, I can only say that I will never ride anything other than a Titan bike. The after sales service and support was out of the top drawer, and for value for money, you cannot go wrong with the component mix. Best value for money brand on the market by far. The 5 year multi-user warranty also tells you that the brand is super confident of the quality of their frames. and their their product.. I have upgraded the original spec 100 mm fork and shock to 120 mm of travel, and I now have a dream bike. Wishing you many hours of fun on your new bike. Please post a pic when you get it.

Would say you’re on the limit of a large and just on the entry point of an XL. Ideally, get a bike fit done to measure you up so that your lbs can help you make a decision with the available geometry information on the frames.

Thanks @ Woodrow for reinforcing my decision, been looking for a while and based on other rider feedback and definitely pricing I am set on getting a Titan, ideally 120mm, budget wise I have been looking at the 120 cypher Dash. Still don't quite understand the difference between the models but I will get there. Just don't want to make an expensive mistake and buy the wrong size.

@Boktiet82 Have you tried an XL as a comparison?

I have not ridden the XL, but in the store on the day, i did do a "fit" in the store and realised the dimensions on the L suited me better. Like Dassie said, it's best to go and check the models in store and see what's best for you. When it comes to bikes, TR does a great recommendation, but having longer arms/torso/legs on the same overall height makes a difference. In SCOTT bikes for example, I prefer the XL, TR the L was the better choice.
