I think companies that manufacture performance enhancement drugs should sponsor some teams. The sooner you get disqualifyied the better your product. Tongue

Perhaps the better product would be one for which there is no test (like Balco's steroid which would still have been untested if someone hadn't told on him).

There probably are some such products around, ask Bruyneel to give you some pointers.

If I were the marketing brain behind the 2010 Soccer World Cup, I'd pay a small fee to use the new blank kit of the team formerly known as Barloworld to promote the event.

They race all over the world and the return on investment is huge (when compared to standard marketing and advertising costs). It's like a mobile international billboard. And obviously the riders (a cosmopolitan lot as they hail from 10 different countries - 11 if you add Chris Froome's two) are going to be racing really hard at every race cos they'll be wanting to secure contracts with new teams when their current ones are up. So they'll be in more breaks, winning more sprints and on more podiums, getting more media exposure.

And let's face it, when there's talk of the U.S. or Brazil being the Plan B countries to host the 2010 World Cup should our own country not be in a position to host it, then what's there to lose? After all, cycling is the second most-popular sport in Europe after soccer...

I think it is

Maybe they wanted to pull out at the end of the year..... this would be an eazy way out! Very sad for South Africa but still strong message to send the "doping" boys in the peloton??????????

Yeah I am also sure HR wanted to pull out 100% but that would have been the easy way out.. now he just have a strong message for 100%

I think it is a poor decision for Barloworld to withdraw their sponsorship from cycling. It sends out a bad message for South African cycling. Whilst I can understand that there is a zero tolerance for doping - penalise the person who was involved in the doping not the whole team. South African cycling needs a home grown team and the South African cyclists who were riding in this team' date=' did Barloworld proud - they put Barloworld on the map.

Before this cycling team came on to the pro circuit - I never even knew who or what this company did. This is the strength of publicity that the Barloworld cycling team promoted for this business. I am not pro doping because sportsmen should win solely on their strength but how can you penalise a whole team for one person's mis-beahviour - its like sacking a whole company because someone has done soemthing wrong.

My message to Barloworld - Your impulsive decision in pulling your sponsorship from pro cycling, has not only let the team down and costs 45 people their jobs but you have let South Africans like myself down as well. For every action their is a reaction and I am sure you will feel the full might of not having this powerful cycling team promoting your name.

To the rest of the peleton, I hope a worthy South African sponsor will step in and reap the huge benefits that Barloworld have had the priveledge of getting from you all.

at least they will still be involved with cycling :

?Ons gaan by ?n fietsry-akademie in Suid-Afrika betrokke raak,? het Chris Fisher, bemarkingsbestuurder van Barloworld, ges?.

?Die hoofdoel van die akademie sal wees om die oorbrugingsfase vir jong, talentvolle plaaslike fietsryers van Suid-Afrika na Europa te vergemaklik.?

Just pondering all this and thought perhaps the rules of engagement between Barloworld and the team were clear i.e. one doper and you're all out ...

In that case the team should have 'guarded' themselves better ......

Just a thought' date=' use it don't .......

Ahhhhmmmmmmm jaaaaaaaaaaa

Says Chris Fisher, head of corporate marketing at Barloworld, ?We consistently drive the values of our business through the team. Team Barloworld has a zero tolerance policy towards doping which has been constantly communicated to the riders ? we have to act on this policy and as such we will all have to live with the long term consequences of one individual?s action.

I wouldn't exactly hold my breath for it, but it will probably be good for a laugh (or keeping degreaser and chain lube off the carpet). What publication holy? Any idea?

hmmmmm.let's assume you're telling the truth, i may have a couple of ethical and professional problems with your report and how you've gone about it. do as you please, but bear me out here.

1-you referred to me as a "wannabe" journo on that thread, so surely you looked at my profile. do you doubt that is my real name? it is, and any hubber out there would vouch for that.  if you like, phone "the star" and check if i am employed there.

2-how long would you observe a certain forum before deciding to "stir"? surely this would give you some background as to the kind of things that annoy or gets them, as you say, "going"? is it merely the subject matter? the way it is presented? the source of the original post? the standing of the poster within that particular online community? how multiple threads on the same subject within a forum annoy the regular users? there are many variables at play. you're sampling may be a bit on the short side here.

3-would any objective journo announce that they were just there to stir? would one give oneself away so early in the "game"? surely that thread still had legs, but you brought yourself out in the open with mocking posts, referring to yourself variously as "i" and "we"? questionable.

anyway, as i said, do as you please, and, yes, i would love to read your report if it ever sees the light of day. if you need help with grammar and spelling, you know where to find meRight-click%20here%20to%20download%20pictures.%20To%20help%20protect%20your%20privacy,%20Outlook%20prevented%20automatic%20download%20of%20this%20picture%20from%20the%20Internet. We are doing an indepth psychological study on different types of forums on the internet and what gets people going.  The forums that we really get the most reaction from are sport forums, who are predominantly made up of men. They are also the most aggressive and abusive forums.  For instance dieting forums are made up mostly of women and they are generally polite.

I must admit that we knew we were going to get an onslaught - but isn't it strange how the whole thread changed when we threw in that bit about doing it for research - no one was even talking about what was originally said:)

Once it comes out, I will tell you who it is for - I write mostly for overseas publications and do a lot of journo work for ABC news.

What is your name?
