weekend sunset rides in Cape Town. is it safe or dangerous vs the usual morning rides on a weekend.

My buddy is hooked on weekend rides and asked me if we must do a sunset ride...I am a bit hesitant as I feel sunset seems more dangerous (visibility, more traffic, criminality, drunk drivers)

If I am wrong please advise...if there is some good options or routes let me know.

this is for road biking.

What side of the city do you live? I frequently ride at night, mostly as a mode of transport and have never encountered issues. Bright ass lights for visibility of course. There's of course a level of being lucky to it. If you're hesitant, you can do a relaxed ride on the prom to see the sunset set, always a lovely experience.

wynberg/kenilworth

normally do main road all the way to Simonstown and beyond...mornings are fine as the road not yet busy...but im wondering if its still feasible from 4:30pm onwards...I also dont mind parking somewhere and riding where its more quiet...

I would think that riding Main Road from Wynberg has a pretty high mugging risk for both early mornings or late evenings until you get to about The Toad.

Sunset is only at 7:30 pm so you have three hours. More traffic in the evening but probably safer from a mugging perspective.

Obviously the wind is usually blowing harder along the coast in the afternoons too.

For possibly less windy sunset rides (and where you can actually see the sun set!) perhaps drive to Milnerton Lighthouse and ride to Melkbos and back, or Camps Bay to top of Chappies?

From Wynberg, it's safer to ride Spaanschemat Rd, which has a bike lane, rather than Main Rd.

I avoid main road as much as I can and only join from under the bridge by the build it. But I then take the constantia road and do boyes drive and on main road by kalk bay. Only coming home I take main road all the way coz it’s quicker.

sunset ride , just meant a late ride . I’ll try the Melkbos route 1 day. Campsbay to chappies also seems like a good 1. I guess the best way to know is to just explore

My wife and myself sometimes park at Mouille Point lighthouse and cycle to the top of suikerbossie and back no issues thus far, never tried a weekend evening though

We go in the week, good way to miss peak traffic leaving town as we live in the southern suburbs

Did you use less windy, Milnerton, and Melkbos in the same sentence?😂

Well you have to pick your day, but False Bay is generally windier than that side in the afternoon, at least in summer.

Right now, here's Windguru for Muizenberg and Melkbos today
