an alternative to the GP500s that everyone is suggesting is the Pirelli Cinturato Velo.

Excellent puncture resistance and wet and dry performance.

Good Day All

I'm in the Market for New Road Bike Tyres

Any suggestions?

Question 1 - what's your budget? Great tyres will not retail for anything under R1K ea. unless it's stock clearance or some other sale.

Both are tyres and that's about where the similarities end.Ā Not an alternative, not even the Pirelli model that tries to compete with GP5k.

I'm considering the P Zero TLR from Pirelli.

Make sure it's one of the versions with SpeedCore as the old ones aren't great. The 2023 model is a bit over engineered against punctures. Ends up as a great race capable tyre for folks wanting extra peace of mind, but for sure not competitive in terms of rolling resistance. The 2024 RS model toned down the puncture protection and is suppose to be a great option. I'm only 200km on my set so too early to tell about punctures, but runs well. They have class leading grip that you can really feel when cornering, and are a bit more resilient than GP5k for only small rolling resistance loss.

it all depends on what you're looking for in a tyre, for me I'd rather sacrifice rolling resistance for puncture protection

Iā€™ve ridden the Pirelliā€™s which are great, but puncture protection for our roads is an issue. Iā€™ve found the vittoria corsa next TLR tyres to be a good alternative with much better puncture resistance and no loss in performance. They are a tight fit to get on though.Ā

For sure depends on what you're optimising for, which is why the Cinturato is a very good alternative to the Gatorskin, and a really bad "alternative" to the GP5k.

if I could afford to run 2 sets of tyres, or even better, 2 sets of wheels, I'd have the Pirellis for training and the something fast like the GP5000 for race day.

On paper the non-RS version of the P Zero TLR with SpeedCore is probably on of the best compromises then.
