Hi all,

I have an anthem (2013 model) with 2x10 crank I think is a 40/32 and rear im not sure.

What i would like to do is put a new crankset in that has a 44 big ring and around a 36 2nd ring. Is this possible and would I need to change the cassette?

(I actually need new crank, cassette and hub as when I stand to pedal i have a serious grating noise and feels like my chain is slipping)

The reason is, I am spinning out on downhill and flats! Where i have the most fun! Climbing has always been a weakness and not too worried about that though. I've accepted it!

But I wanna MAKE the wind on the down hills 🙏👍😎

Any suggestions? 🙏

Most likely Yes. It depends on 1. Can you find chainrings for that crank, and 2. Will the new rings fit on your frame (you may have issues with the chainring hitting the rear stay on some frames). Nevertheless this is a great upgrade, and you can generally make up for any new gearing shortfall with an appropriate choice of cluster.

Have a look at Sheldon Browns gear calculator to get an idea of the impact.

Thanks, I'll  check it out. If I must buy a new crankset to fit the bigger ring then I will, I just don't really wanna go 1x becuase then I'll have a massive ring front and back and it will cancel out. Don't wantnto go much bigger than a 38 on the rear. So if I have say 32 and 2nd ring, then I may work 🤷‍♂️

Uhmmmm ... 1x certainly makes life easier, especially in the technical stuff.

2x still has its place where you want TOP END, but you also want to be able to get up a mountain with a 100km in your legs ....

Speak to the mechanics that knows their stuff.  Apparently the various from derailures cope better with certain jumps between the big and small ring (my translation, and probably not prefect).

So you want the 44 for top end, then the small ring is sort of a set size for the shifting to work properly.  Now your small ring determines the large gear at the back for the climbing you want ....

I know Mark went with a standard 2X set in front, with a 42 large.  Partnering with @BuffsVintageBikes they won the half 36one.  So possibly a good indication that it is a nice gear set .... then again, Mark is one STRONG rider !!
