Helping a friend to give this BMX a second life ...

My first time with this type of steerer -

The rest of the bearings are in need of TLC, BB bearings to be replaced.

Thus I want to service the steerer as well.

Any tips or videos will be appreciated.

That is a mid-skool freestyle bmx. that contraption allows you to spin the bars without the brake cable winding up, it's essentially just "cups". By squeezing the calipers you remove the tension and can then just release the cables i.e. the 2 at the top & the 2 at the bottom, then you can service the bearings as per any other bike fork. just take special note of how you remove each spacer & lock nut(s) for reassembly.

That's old school as it has a 1inch threaded steerer tube and quill stem. "mid school" would of been Aheadset.

Youtube should be the answer to service that.

Thank you.  This is the type of info I am needing ...

The concept of the spinning front end I knew existed .... but thats about it.  I have no idea about "mid school" a "headset", etc, thus hoping for some more info to not jump down the wrong rabbit hole when searching ....

The fork has 1inch steerer tube with thread and the headset uses that thread to tighten the whole thing down. They were notorious for coming loose after almost every trick and you'd have to hand tighten it before the next one. The stem is then inserted into the fork and tightened with a wedge.

Aheadset is like all bikes now. The stem is tightened by the top cap and pulls the headset together.
