.....
I'm not allowed to run anymore.
....

Because of the movement, or because of the impact ?

even a few hundred meters of running and my knees are done ....  but I can walk, even did a sub-3 half marathon.  Loving 10 to 15km trail walks.

Hip cartilage degeneration due to massively high dosages of cortisone decades ago to stay alive as a 20ish year old. Need to look after the bit I still have left.. kinda

The solution is quite simple really (maybe not for everyone, but for a lot of people. You might still need Physio though). I've been cycling seriously since I was 16, but as soon as I hit the big 40 last year, I started developing the same hip pains you're talking about. Shorter cranks were the answer. I reduced all my crank lengths (road and MTB to 170mm) and the change was very noticeable. Most riders over-extend the hip unnecessarily at the top of the pedal stroke, due to cranks which are too long. Do this, even just 1 degree too much, 80x per minute for 4 hours, and the cumulative effect is massive. With the wide range cassettes we have nowadays,  there's no need for the leverage offered by the longer cranks. Because I'm rather short (168cm) and so convinced about the results already experienced, I'm now going a step further and changing all my cranks to 165mm.

Same here. I'm on 170s on the gravel bike. Want to move the other bicycles (at least road) to 165mm for exactly the same reason!

sounds like my issue right now just mine is on the inside i.e. groin. At first I thought is was running induced so I stopped for like 6 weeks with no improvement but carried on cycling occasionally and the pain would just return worse than before. So I did a run this past weekend and no issues with the groin while running. I guess I'll be laying off from the cycling for a while until I can get some imaging done.

Milky....i would definitely recommend Dr.Marc Nortje at Vincent P Hospital to you.

I also suffered with this pain in the groin area for years. I could not sit on chair for extended periods wothout pain....and it turned out to be labrum tear which only a MRI picked up .....Been for bike fits, all types of scans , physio, cortisone injection via ultrasound scan, etc...through various specialist including Sports Science Centre....

Had the hip arthroscopic procedure, discharged after two days and lots of home physio exercises...90% resolved and yes, stick have clicking noise from the hip area with some movements

Thanks for this reply, I dont have issues sitting at all, just when opening the legs to wide or when cycling and climbing hills where I'm forcing power through my hips. MRI is definitely my next step. October & November month was when I suddenly ramped up my miles in prep for W2W & DC. With DC being the toughest of the 2 & that is when my problem started.

I have had both hips replaced. The right, 7 years ago. The left, 14 months ago. I am now walking and riding again totally pain free.
