Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help me diagnose an issue with my derailleur.

Recently, shifting started becoming unreliable. When I took a closer look, I noticed that the cage wasn’t returning to its normal position after shifting, which left the chain hanging loose. It feels like the cage has lost its spring tension.

I disassembled the derailleur to check it, and when I reinstall the cage onto the clutch assembly and tighten it, the cage becomes completely stiff and doesn’t return, even after correctly pre-tensioning the spring.

Could this be a problem with the clutch mechanism itself? Is this something that can be repaired, or does it mean the derailleur needs to be replaced?

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

the clutch could be clogged with dirt or the plastic sea is deformed and is creating too much friction.

Usually replacing the entire Derailleur Pulley cage with clutch is the only long term solution. The sprag bearing clutch can be flushed out and regreased.

Thanks for the reply, the clutch on this thing is completely enclosed in the derailleur, so I cant even see if it's clogged or now. Also have no idea how you would get it out if you want to replace it...

When I rotate the clutch from the Allen key side it's stiff, but smooth. But the whole thing rotates, which I'm not sure if it should do that.

The whole thing should not rotate. It should be smooth about the allen key but stiff to rotate anti clock wise. If not then the clutch is likely failed. It's not common. If its less than 3 yrs old and you have paperwork to prove you can get it warrantied. A new Jockey pulley cage assembly comes with clutch so that should sort it out

I've been trying to find an example of the cage assembly, but all I can find is the csixx one, and that doesn't look like it comes with a clutch. Do you have any idea who I can ask?

The SRAM genuine parts kit will have a cage with clutch. Aftermarket options don’t. You can also buy the genuine cage separately…well as least you could

Ok, I'll see if I can find one through my LBS.

Thanks for your help

Only the Transmission comes with a clutch, OG AXS the clutch is part of the P knuckle and is not serviceable.

If it's stuck, new RD.

That's what I was worried about. Cycle Lab says clutch/cage assembly, but I told them I cant see how to remove it... Guess they don't really know.
Thanks for the reply
