upgrade or not?

Last year October I bought a Silverback Alpine mtb. This is a typical beginners bike and in all the races I do, you see them often. Now I was at my bikeshop picking it up from a service since I'm doing the 30km race in Stellenbosch this Saturday and they advised me that considering the amount of riding I do, I will outgrow my bike soon. As well that when I upgrade, rather not invest in components, like better shocks/ wheels, but go for a better bike in total.

What is wisdom? I always thought that the Silverback has quite good components thought to go for a lighter frame first, before upgrading parts...

what price range should I look at if I do decide to upgrade; is that untill approx 10,000?

Is there anything wrong with your current bike?

Dan Craven (a hubber/cycling superstar/international personality) won a race in namibia on some old steel frame with downtube shifters a while ago.

Rather train harder Wink

How much riding do you do?

Always thought Silverback had a couple of models under the Alpine, which would put it above the beginners category imo. Don't know much about mtb so my opinion probably doesn't count for much but I reckon unless you are doing serious mileage and races you are probably on the right bike

Hmmm, so bikeshop recommends you buy a new bike?

Mine did that a couple of months after selling me the 1st one.

I wasn't convinced they had my best interests at heart.

Stick with what your happy with, but the scumbags know they've planted a seed in your mind.

No, there is nothing wrong with it, the problems I had are solved and I like the bike.

It is a bit heavy, but so am I. Embarrassed

Train harder sounds like good advice. Have no intention to win a race, but just enjoy it. Especially with Summer coming, I look forward to my daily early morning Chappies ride.

Have done approx 1000 km's sofar, majority offroad.

Your best option is to replace the parts as they wear out for now.

The benefit of buying a whole new bike is the price is usually lower than it would be for all the parts separately.

I am almost complete with upgrading my gt avalanche 3.0 with deore components to a meteore team frame with x.9 components.

All in all I have spent about 25% more money on the bike that what I would have if I had gone and purchased a complete bike.

Upside is that not everyone has got 10 - 12K to spend on a decent HT once of so upgrading as you have cash flow might be the only option

Keep riding it until you improve. See if you can ride a mate's bike or a demo to decide if an upgrade is worth it.

Welcome to the hub

I myself have a silverback alpine. In races some guys eyeballs almost pop out when i cruise past them. just because you have a R20K bike doesn't mean you can ride Big%20smile

the specs on the silverback are not bad component wise. i upgraded my RD to a XT for reliability in races. added some BBB triple compound brake pads for extra stopping power & shimano SPD pedals.

The best upgrade you can do is to through away that useless Suntour fork away and get yourself a decent one. I got a Tora 318 air solo and what a difference it made. Your body will thank you for it.

best of luck

I also have a cheapie suntour on my 'goose, and I can vouch for the terribleness (or is that terribility) of them!

If I can get an air-shock for a decent price I'm buying.

A friend of mine has one....she calls it a TANK.

My opinion regarding upgrading will never change.

That being that irrespective of how well the bike performs, if you can afford upgrade any parts without you or your kids going hungry, then buy it.

ALWAYS spend as much money as possible on your bike!
