Frame upgrade

quickdraw

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am thinking of upgrading my current XTC1 frame (17")

I was checking out the Cannondale Caffeine and the BMC team SL 03?

Was also wondering if Giant stll make the hybrid XTC (with the carbon stays) or where I could get one?

Anybody think this is a worthwhile upgrade or any other ideas out there?

Thanks

Deon

My brother just took delivery of a Caffeine. He's loving it after being on a Scalpel for a few months.

If you do get it, be sure to check the paint finish very well. The first one, if it wasn't the wrong size, would have been returned because of bad paint finish.

The LBS said that it was becoming common with Cannondale frames.

Got it from our LBS in Hermanus. Think he paid about 4800 for the frame only.

He used the parts off his Scalpel frame which he is selling.

Any idea on the weight of the Caffeine frame.

It seems that Cannondale is taking this hands down

Anybody got comments on the Gary Fisher Big Sur frame (carbon stays)?

Don't buy into this carbon stays business. It might dampen some vibration and it's some cases heavier then alu.

The problem with buying a Cannondale is that you will not need to buy another bike for years.

Anybody got an older F600SL - F1000 frame in a medium?

How does the Caffeine compare to these older models?

Depends which F600 and F1000Sl you refer to.

They came in both CAAD4 and CAAD5 versions.

The CAAD5 is possibly the best hardtail XC race frame ever made. It blended comfort with light weight and was super responsive under acceleration. It's handling was also superb and the steering would certainly inspire confidence.

The Caffeine is essentially an updated Optimo frameset with some versatility built in to cter for fitting paniers and other goodies for cycletouring.

It's still once of the lightest aluminium framesets you can buy at a shade under 2 kg. The Taurien (carbon Fibre) is a shave over 1.5Kg. both come with lifetime warranty to first owner.

Justin from Bike Haven was selling a medium CAAD5 recently. I think they wanted R5k for the frame. It was blue in Volvo team finish.

A collectors item. Was considering it but decided on a Scalpel Carbon 100 instead

Thanks man

Do you know if it was a new (older model frame) or second hand - Is 5k a reasonable price for a secondhand hardtail frame?

it was 2nd hand.

It was also in excellent condition.

R5k is a very reasonable price to pay for a frame that cost R13K new!
