Dual Control or RapidFire?

Flippa

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of upgrading my groupset to 2008 XT. I have a choice, take Dual Control and get the upgrade now or wait until there is stock in the country for RapidFire (who knows how long?).

Recommendations please.

Dual control takes a little while to get used to, but once you've got your head around it, IMO its a better system. I was the same as HR, I thought rapid fire was the way to go when I first used dual control, but once I had adapted, I saw the light. The new XT and XTR are also a step up on their predecessors, because the lever is better positioned too. Go for XTR levers rather its a whole lot lighter and not that much more

i think that was my problem. i have pretty small hands and felt i didn't have enough control over them. the rapidfire's were more "convenient".

I bought my rapid fire levers from CRC. They have a box set for about GBP80 which includes changers, shadow rear derailleur and all cables. I love the stuff. If youdon't want to change your breaks then go for rapidfire otherwise I would say it's six of the one and a half dozen of the other.

Dual control is an amazing ride. Once you get the hang of flipping through gears and braking in the same movement you will never look back. You can also flick gears from a variety of hand positions such as if you are on your bar ends.

Downside is that you will need to maintain your cables more regularly. They are slightly more prone to wear and tear on the cables. If you want an install and leave it gear system, go rapidfire.

Dual Control is the business.  They do need a bit more maintenance, but they are amazing to ride with.

What are the typical maintenance problems?

The mechanisms in the shifters are a bit sensitive to dust, so after a while the shifting gets harder and harder.  I found that chain cleaner and a toothbrush, followed by a light lube sorts the problem out nicely.

??!

More sensitive to dust....Ok, ..if Youthink so.

I prefer the Dual Control shifter.

It's the same mechanism as found in the rapidfire trigger but:

the Dual control ergonomics are better

The Dual control allows for shifts from the bar ends

the Dual Control lever articulates so it's less likely to be damaged in a crash and it also won't punch a hole in your carbon frame!

TheDual Control frees up space on the handle bar for other goodies like a garmin, lights, bell etc..
