Spruit See-saw in the Sandton chronicle again.

I read the front page of the Sandton Chronicle last night. Apparently the rider that came off on the see-saw picked up a spinal injury. Really sad for him and his family.

What irritates me is that the writers of the article are putting the blame on the guys that built the see-saw. They're also claiming that the see-saw got stuck, and the dude had nowhere to put his feet.

This is absolute bull! Even IF the see-saw got stuck, you could unclip, or you could ramp it. Why blame the builders of the obstacle for the person getting injured, even though he chose to ride it? There are (were) warning signs, surely if a grown man can't read you shouldn't blame the builders?

One of the lines in the article, if I remember correctly, said something like "cyclists trying their hand at engineering" - in reference to the construction of the see-saw.

Angry

With respect' date=' that see-saw was an accident waiting to happen. I see it's has been removed now.[/quote']

Agreed no safety zones Angry

Im glad they removed it now I dont have to be a girl anymore... SHutup MAmparaLOL

The only reason I didnt do it was purely that fact no safety zones as If I landed up with spinal injury how would I ride my tricycle and raise money?

Yip, it was a girl again and now he ran to his mommy (okay he did not really did that). I did not ride it myself because I know what I can do and can't.

The really bad part is that he might not get on a bike again. Hope he does and writes this off as just an accident.

Exactly.... I prefer to attempt to ride thru the spruit.....almost made it but algae buildup on rocks and and a hump keeps on getting me stuck.....

Yeah hope he recovers and thinks next time.....

Ive watched my friend come off luckily before going to far on it and landed on the last part of grass and almost into that fence

eish, not good that he is so badly injured. hope he heals up and is able to ride again one day.

we all chose the risks we take. it does not take a brain surgeon to realise some obstacles are dangerous. we should all be level headed and grown up enough to make the correct choice based on our level of experience. if not, your parents should be with you to make that choice. if you chose to cross a road at a blind corner and get hit by a car coming around that corner, you cannot blame the roads department for making hte road or allowing a blind corner on the road - the responsibility to behave responsibly rests with you.

F_ing typical of this pathetic society we live in....noone has the balls to take responsibility for their own actions.

If that sounds unsympathetic....too bad. It's intentional. He chose to ride it himself!

My wife laughed at me for not riding it, but I am still here today. I chose not to ride it, and that's that. If you choose to ride it, do it at your own risk. Don't blame anyone else. MintSauce said it right, take responsibility.

Engineering??? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to build a see-saw. I had a look at how they built it as I wanted to build one to put next to it. It was to be a bit wider and with "hand rails" on either side, for safety. This way, one had the option to do the Macho, the Woosie, and the river cross. Any, back to my point... whoever built that see-saw, did a good job in my opinion. The bearings were of the sealed type and way larger than needed for this application. The units were  (when I  had a look 3 weeks ago) in perfect  condition with no rust, so I don't think that they malfunctioned.

The only explanation can be that he rode up the see-saw too slow and then fell off before before he reached the pivot point. I have seen someone come off, just after the pivot point, but due to his speed and hight, still landed on the other side.

Thank you PB! This is exactly what I was aiming at. They had massive bearings it there, should be good for many years since there's no high-speed rotation or excessive load.

I think someone at the newspaper is trying to get a bit of sensation going.

Holy roller, I asked a fair question and nobody answer. I had to take all the trouble to Google those words. I felt lonely and betrayed.
