  1. 1. Do you listen to your Ipod/cellphone during a race?

    • Yes, I don't need to be able to hear my fellow cyclists....

During the Lost City race, we had a fellow rider in our group. He had his Ipod and was listening to lekker tunes while riding. The volume was quite high, cause even riding next to him at about 40 km/h, I could hear the doef-tji-doef-tji of his next killer track. This ouk was in his own world of racing, and didn't take much notice of any other riders around him. You needed to haev an extra few cms between you and him, since you never knew when he'll do a move again, without him know your close behind him.

Are earphones actually allowed during races?

I know that at recent MTB XC races the commissaire (sp?) commented that they are not allowed.

I would not use them at road races where bunch riding is tricky at best .... however at marathon MTB races I would suggest they are 'more' acceptable .......

Bought a little mp3 player because I thought it would be naaise tp listen to tunes. It actually makes me feel very uncomfortable as I feel so detached from the environment. I think it is dangerous. And when you are in the outdoors what do you want to drown the sound of nature for.

in Mtb training i find it great but durin a race the only earpiece that i know is allowed is the earpiece for elite teams other than that it is certainly not allowed at all

but i have to agree that it is actually a waste of a good ride to have tjoones blaring in your ears where you could much rather be listening to the hum of your tyre on the road!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll take my iPod with on a race, so that when i get dropped, I have something to help me survive the rest of the race. But I've never used it!!!

Generally I have it while training or commuting, but only have one earpiece in so i can hear the cars and other cyclists!!!

Never mind the hum of your tyres, listen to the symphony of swearing from your competitors.

I agree. I use mine everywhere I go. I mostly train alone, and when I ride, it's not like I communicate to much with other riders. I don't however play the music so freaking loud that other people can hear it riding next to me.

I prefer having my tunes to listen to. They help me maintain a nice rythm. Plus, like BigB said, after some time, and you are REALLY flippen tires, you need something to take your mind of what you are doing so that you can just aimlessly continue. LOL

I tried it, don't like it.

I like hearing my tyres scrub when I'm flying through a corner, I like hearing if there's a knock developing on the bike somewhere, I like hearing cars if I'm commuting. I think it's important that you hear and see what's going on.

stupid to use when on the road, cannot hear what is going on around you. Try and avoid being near someone who is using one
