After about one year MTB riding, my back tyre looks a bit worse for wear, but the front looks almost as good as new. I ride mostly rocky / loose gravel singletrack.

My question is, if I swap my back to the front, would I compromise safety (due to teh worn tyre)?

I know that I will save a couple of rand, but a visit to the hospital would be far more expensive.

Yes, you will lose the tracktion on the front wheel. Just replace the rear now. If you swop then you will have to replace front and back in another years's time.

NEVER compromise your front tire quality

I would put a new one on the front and use the current front on the back.

Why's that? I would think the rear takes more of a beating?

A rear tire lossing traction is bad......Cry

A front tire washing out is REALY BAD......Ouch

Normally your tyre wears out on the centre tread. This doesnt influence your front tyre as much as your back. If your side ribs/knobs are worn then that is a different story.

I suppose it also depends what kind of tyres you have.

I wouldnt let the back get too bad. Say 25% left where you would probably have only lost max 25% on the front. That's when I would change over. End up with 2 worn tyres.

If you are free-riding and gripping your tyres to the max, I would be judging your tyres by a close inspection. But just regular XC, I stick to my guns.

A front tyre going flat on a long fast downhill will most likely cost you a broken collarbone or a broken something. A back tyre going flat is not a crises. On a rocky long downhill you will lose your rim from all the knocks it will take, but you should remain in control. SO ALLWAYS KEEP THE FRONT TYRE IMPECKABLE.

No no... Scrap the advice of all. Ride a worn tire in front. Even if you are doing a down hill event. Please. I will be waiting at a spot to take a photo as you fall and break your bones. I think some mag's will use my photo's again then...
