BMX racing in the 80's in SA was huge. Racing in SA was well on par with the rest of the world.

Mid 80's there was a group of Americans, Ausies and New Zealanders that came out for a month or so. Most of the were worlds medalists or at least top 8 riders. They got their butts wiped for them when they got here. The South Africans were well on top of their game then.

Things seemed to die off alot in the 90's but looks like BMX racing is making a comeback with the youngsters in South Africa again. Good starting ground for track riders.

I remember those tours. The Hutch team came in 84 i think, and then the Aussies the year after that. That one Aussie was pretty quick though, Andrew Figliomeni, or something like that. I remember seeing Mike Fickert in BMX Action magazine winning 14 /15 open at one of the yank Nationals, he blew those guys away.

Chunkster, good memories hey? We had two of the New Zealnd guys stay with us on that Tour. They were scaffy dudes. I remember getting back from racing at Germiston one night and they just climbed in o bed without showering after a nights racing. Kiwi's, go figure.

I got a picture somewhere of a very young ( and slightly smaller Shaun Lynch) taken at a provincial prize giving back in the 80's. Shaun you better give me permission to post itLOL.

I alos remember to HUTCH Team riders from the US, with the likes of Woody Itsen, the trick dude. He blew everyone away with his tricks at Lonehill and was a deamon o the quarterpipe.

Loved and miss those days.

I saw the Hutch team at Kadimah. Mike Buff had broken his leg and gave Lee Irving(Troys brother) his awesome Hutch Trickstar. Lee got got quite good at freestyle. I know Troy ended up in the states racing for the MCS factory team, but not sure what happened to him after that.

I have a program somewhere for the 86 Nationals, its got Chunkys profile in it. I should scan it and post here.

Well gentleman there is no need to wonder what happened to me (GESHOO), a slogan i wore on my racing pants, thats right Troy Irving.

Looking back at those days and one word comes to mind awesome, i was part of the hutchs team with michael fikkert ect and then went onto the US to join up with Hutch racing USA.

Hutch went bellyup and i was picked up by MCS Racing, did very well - #1 20' and #2 cruiser in the state of florida. 9 and 11 the same year for nationals. in that time i had a few sa riders come over for the worlds in orlando florida.

i returned to SA in 88 after 4 years abroad.

I then started riding mountain bikes, joined up with the late Matthew kimble for fun rides and the odd race, till his sudden passing.

the picture posted is not mathew kimble he went to Glen High Pretoria.

During 90 i joined the SAPS stationed at an elite unit till 2000, spending most of the time traveling within and outside SA, then moved to the private sector till 2005 applying the same trade as in the SAPS,and returned to a parastatill (SARS).

Its great to hear people still talk about the bmx error from the late 70's to the 90's

Well guys keep in touch, hope to hear from all the BMX folks from back then, oh to gary rabie hope you remember me.

Hey Troy, good to hear from you. Of course I remember you and the HUTCH boys. (I will never forget Michael Fikkerts crash at Sun City where he snapped his leg).

I still need to scan some of my old pics and post them here. Really good memories. I also have a few old national programs and pics from when the yanks where out here.

Talking about slogans on the back of racing pants, I had "U Loze" on mine. When I showed my wife the pics and she saw that she said I must have been an arrogant little sh!t. I disagreed, just confident!

By the way, you got any old school BMX parts lying around you would consider selling to me?

BMX track at Fourways Bike Park is just about ready.  I'm gonna be getting me a Kuwahara Cruiser to play with!!

I spent my youth riding a BMX bike.  I think it is about to explode in this country!
